Try and find a spot that he loves to go, if he is a bar person..his favorite bar, beach guy, have a beach bbq.
keep it fun and simple, and revolving around something he loves.

Obviously you can't do this one on your own, but a surprise party is a great idea. To make it really effective you have to let your partner know that a party is planned - with just a few close friends, but you keep the number of people a secret.

I love theme parties. It depends on what your husband likes. My guy loves beach vacations, so I would give him a tiki party, with tropical drinks and lots of island touches. Just take whatever he loves and make it explode all over the party! There are a lot of other great ideas on this website.
Get him a stripper to jump out of the cake or a present box
do something to make him feel young like going to a bowling alley and surprise him with all his friends make a homemade cake make two if its a big party make his favorite cake and or cup cakes

and let everyone break into teams and enjoy the game
