Can i teach my cat to walk on a leash?!

Question:

Can i teach my cat to walk on a leash?

Answers:
Yes cats can be taught to walk on a leash, just be patient. Cats always think they are in charge.

(This really belongs in the pets question area)

if you start when they are kittiens

Yes, I've seen it done. The cat looked sorta spastic whenever birds came by though.

Not a great answer, I know, but hey, I'm a cook, not an animal trainer. Try a different topic.

you sure can, it will take some time because you cat is not use to it.

yes. my mom did it with her cats. and they werent kittens. they were a few yrs old

I'm not sure why you are in the "entertaining" section, but yes, you can teach a cat to walk on a leash. My friend's cat was 9 years old when he learned. He didn't like it at first, but he had no choice if he wanted to be outside. We used a little harness, like the kind you would buy for a small dog, rather than a collar. Within a month, if you said "walk" to him, or if you picked up the harness he went right to the back door and stretched himself up on his hind legs on the door so that we could strap him into his harness. It was the darndest (and cutest) thing!

Yes but PLEASE don't. People with cats on leads (leashes) look soooo dumb! And so does the poor cat!

yup, and to toilet train, but i wouldnt do it. as i have only one bathroom in my apartment, but i take my cat out on a retractable leash, she likes it. eats grass, and stuff, but i would not walk her down the block, it looks wacky.

yes u can

of course you can

Yeah but its hard and you have to start early.

Cat's can definitely be taught to walk on a leash, but some will freak out the first time you put the leash on. You probably want to use a harness, as opposed to a leash that attches to a normal collar. To teach them how to walk on a leash, try putting on the leash and just letting them walk around so they can get used to it (obviously, you want to do this some place where the leash won't get caught on anything). You can also put the leash on and get them to go a short distance by offering a treat, and gradually increase the distance. Be patient, and you probably aren't going to get it in one session. But if you keep it up, then you should be able to do it.

i think you can but you have to start when they are small

Yeah. My music teacher taught her cat to roll over, beg, shake and other things! it just takes time. good luck

take my advice its true

?

The operative word here is 'cat'. You could TRY, but I can almost guarantee it won't work, and the cat will hate you. You have to start out when they are very young!

you should be able to. but you know cats have been know to be stubborn. they make a special leash for cats, i would take him/her to the petshop and try it to make sure its right for your cat.
best of luck ((some states you have to cat a cat on a leash now.))

yes you can. i find the best way is to buy a harness you can pick one up for around $5 Au and it comes with a leash. if you just put the harness on the cat for a short time each day at first increasing the amount of time as the cat gets used to it, then once used to it try with the leash do it very slow. if you try to rush the cat you wont see results. walk it around the house to start and once the cat knows that it's OK and is calm then try outside remember short amounts of time to start with.

good luck

remember not to scold the cat, praise is the key when doing this, a simple no when it miss behaves and it will soon learn what is acceptable.
