If everything is the best thing since sliced bread. What came before it?

Everyone says that's the best thing since sliced bread. I have always wandered what came before sliced bread?. Well I mean I guess you could say non sliced bread.

It is called an expression! Most expressions do originate from something factual, but sometimes it was just something clever someone said and people begane to use it more and more.

If I have to guess, I'd say before sliced bread there was uuuh. . . bread that was torn instead of neatly slicedor maybe before that - NO bread at all?

The saying originated during WWII, when stores quit selling sliced bread. Households were trying to not to be wasteful, and it was thought that unsliced bread would stay fresher longer.

i thnk i'm kind of asnwering ur question with a question. didn't that term come around during like world war I when instant foods were needed cuz wives were too busy to whip up a good meal?
