Diana Ross is always good for any gay event. She is known as the original and the ultimate diva, and the attitude and reputation she used to have (as the ultimate b-i-t-c-h) makes her real popular among gays. The hair, the gowns, the drama---she's really every gay man's (and every drag queen's) ultimate fantasy woman. Despite all the negative things some people say about her I will always love her. To me, she was the trailblazer who openened up the way for African American entertainers to be able to perform on TV and in the prestigious whites-only supper clubs back in a time when people of color in the entertainment business were largely ignored and shunned. And she took it to a whole new level that created opportunities for other R&B singers. Before the success of the Supremes, there really weren't any African American singers on American television, except for those who were playing roles as servants. We owe Diana Ross and the Supremes at least that. Their 'coming out' showed everyone that black women could actually be beautiful and talented. So, in a way, its actually quite fitting that her music should be used for a coming out party. I think she's a really gorgeous woman, and an incredibly talented one, too. Even at 63 years old, she still looks good, she still has a very sexy voice, and I love listening to her.
To be fair, I don't think her career back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s would have been as successful as it was if she were anything other than a b-i-t-c-h. Its actually a given that any woman who has an opinion or tries to take control of her life and career will earn that title anyway, and it usually comes from other women who are envious and from men who have a hard time accepting that a woman can be just as smart or even smarter than they are. There are only a handful of other women who've carried a Top 40 career across a 30-year span: Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, and Cher. But Diana Ross has them all beat because her last album "I Love You", although it wasn't a commercial success in the U.S., debuted in the Billboard top 40, which makes Diana Ross the only singer in history to repeatedly break the Top 40 album charts over a 50-year span. I don't think anyone is ever going to beat that record.
I like the way she's really mellowed out over the years. The bitchiness, the attitude, and the ego are gone and she seems to be a lot more introspective. Her recent performance on American Idol wasn't so hot. But it must have just been a bad night for her, because I saw her in concert after that and she was awesome! She's a lot older now but she still looks and sounds really good on stage.
There's even rumor of a Supremes reunion tour for 2007. This time its Mary Wilson who's asking Cindy Birdsong and Diana Ross to do it. I think these gals are talented enough to pull it off.
Hope your son has a great party!
