Something that everyone is certain to like, that cannot go wrong under pressure and will allow you to be a good host i!.e!. spend lots of time with your guests!.
For a starter
Grilled goats cheese on a large crouton with salad and walnuts
or
roasted onion tart that will have to be prepared beforehand
or
fancy spring rolls/parcels with prawns and homemade chili dip!.

For a main course something like a beef casserole such as Beef Bourguiognon

It is really tasty and will be ready before the guests arrive!. Serve with mashed potatoes (have them ready and heat in oven), julienne carrots and possible a puff pastry shape to decorate the top!.

Pud has to be chocolate profiteroles or could go for the wow factor with a very 70s choux pastry swan (pipe 'S' shape for head and ovela shape for body which is cut in two) filled with raspberries on a lake of sauce!.
