Drinking at 21?!

Question:

Drinking at 21?

Why when reaching ones 21st birthday (and presumed adulthood) is it necessary (or obligation) to plan on drinking (usually to intoxication)?

Answers:
This sounds dumb, but I believe it has to deal with how you were raised. Some people get plastered when they turn 21, others just have one drink. I think it starts from being a teenager, if a person's parents are very strict on them, in cases of drinking and hanging out with drinkers, then it's like forbidden fruit, and they seem to want it more and in excess. For people like me, I'm underage (19) and I have a couple of drinks now and again with my friends( don't worry I stay home, and I tell an adult figure where I am going to be). I was never sheltered from it and I don't feel the need to get toasted on my 21st, a drink or two will be ok. Hope this makes sense...

well i would like to drink at 21, but i don't think it is nessacery.

Because you can.

Because you have waited so long that you have earned to right. For me, I just had a couple of drinks, I didnt even get drunk. But you are only 21 once. It is just fun!

Yes - it is quite necessary to take a group of your best friends out and have them buy you around 21 shots (must take at least 15 to achieve adulthood!!)

Well, I did. However, if you don't care much for alcohol then don't even bother. Just hang-out with your best friends. If you do drink make sure you're either at home or that you have a designated driver if you must travel. Happy birthday.

It is a Myth.... not everyone really does it... lol

Well --- I guess I did (smiling)

Good Luck

Well, it's a highly unoriginal way of celebrating adulthood, don't you think?

Maybe it's because the society doesn't have another rite of passage?
