I don’t want to worry about keeping an eye on people or worrying about my house getting trashed. I want to enjoy my day and have a good time. I want to have a dinner at a restaurant and then go out afterwards. It’s a nice restaurant not too expensive. Because I want to have it at a restaurant is it my responsibility to pay for everyone’s meal? I want everyone to pay their own meal. What is the proper etiquette in this situation?

I would suggest going to Bucca Di Beppos...everything is served family style so everyone can share. Everything is really really good. I would order 1 dish for every 3 people attending and get everyone to agree on what they would like to try and split the bill evenly. Everyone should buy their own drinks if they will be having alcohol.

I used to think the same. But no, when you invite people for a meal at a restaurant you do not have to pay for their meal. If they're over 20 then they will understand that they will have to pay for themselves, or that the bill will split. Unless you specifically say: I invite you to dinner, they should get that you dont pay. (you invite = you pay).
when you invite everyone just be sure to say that it is a "dutch" treat;
Well first of all "HAPPY B-DAY!" It seems that since it is your Birthday, and you don't want your house trashed tell people you have decided to have it at a place you chose to have dinner at. If they are true friends, they will honor your wishes and understand. It seems to me that they should all pitch in and pay for your dinner and even get you buzzed!
Send an invitation asking people to help you celebrate your birthday. On the invitation write:
"No host" cocktails at 7:00 p.m. and "No host" dinner at 8:00 p.m.
This will let everyone know that they are to pay for their own drinks and dinner. This will set up everything, then afterwards when everyone goes out they will know that they will continue to pay for their own.

A polite way to invite people would be to let them know where you're going and what the average cost of a meal is there... that usually gives them the hint!
