Yes, if you can, use tablecloth and linen napkins, candles, good wine and wine glasses, etc. The actual china used can be ordinary dishes if that's all you have - the mood will really be set by the atmosphere and not the individual items. So don't forget the music. Also make sure that any candles, flowers, whatever, is not too tall or it will be in the way as you try to look at each other.
Just keep the mood as your goal and don't get too focused on trying to make the "things" perfect. Seriously, if the two of you have a connection then you could serve Kraft dinner on chipped plates and still make it one of the most romantic, memorable evenings of your lives. Just remember to smile and have fun!

I think A mixture of red and pink rose petals on the tablecloth, and of course, no Romatic table setting is complete without A bottle of fine wine. But The most important piece of the whole thing...is you, look the part, and try to wear a smile.
Fine plates and forks. Dress nice with red napkins...........also, a dark settings.

Do you have any family heirlooms you can use? To me, that is the ultimate. They don't even have to be all that valuable in the antique dealer's sense, but simply precious because there is a story behind it. Then you tell the story and that's a conversation starter.
I have my paternal grandmother's large serving platter. Whenever I have an event large enough to warrant using it, I end up talking about my grandmother and all the wonderful things I got from her that are not material, but mental and spiritual. But that platter remains something material which is also wonderful, and quite old.
Lay yourself naked across the table with the the food as your cover.
Along with finger foods have tall goblets...one with iced water..one with wine...later one with ice cream covered with chocolate and a cherry for dessert....don't forget the whip cream

Creamy marshmallow and pecan stuffed dates rolled in sugar. .
Have new york bread sticks in a large vase (walmart has them)....put a hand towel around the bread.

Another idea is a large mouthed bowl or platter with water and tea lights floating with rose petals.and put the rose petals all over the table as well....if it's an anniversary have the rose petals sprinkled on the floor leading to the bed and on the bed.

First keep the place clean..
set the light to dim mode and focus most of the dim light into the table. all others lights should go off.. this makes the person opposite to you sit and concentrate only on you.. point one.

unfold things into the table .. but should not attract too much of attention.
aroma..from food and the surrounding ?? this needs to be big.. make it mild ..u can try spilling least drops of perfume on cloths.. or use a room spray .. of ur choice..
keep the place insect free...no mosquito's please.
no food should be too hard.. keep it all on mild taste and smell.
no food should be spicy. this will pull the person out of the table to the private room.
use extra special spill cloth to save the person's dress as well yours.. but you can try to spill ice cream and try cleaning that person..
make only mild music to play.. remove or switch off cellphones.. TV.. and even your door bells..
all pets should be out..got.. it.. attention should be only you and you..

What is on the dinner table is fine. Flowers, candles, silver, chrystal, good food, great conversation, but no dessert. Yet.
What is not on the dinner table is also important.
Do you have a couch or lounging area in the background that you can drape a satin spread or sheet across, toss a few satiny pillows onto? something with a table nearby that you can also set up with a dim candle, a bucket with a chilling bottle of sparkling wine, some chrystal stemware and a few sweets (strawberries in chocolate)?
This background scene, especially if seen from your guest's position at the table, implies an evening to come that is filled with sensuality, intimacy, and this anticipation will not only make your romantic dinner completely enjoyable, as he or she will know what waits for them in the other room after both of you are finished with the first course, but it will make the end of your evening one for the books.
Of course, if this ending is not your intention you can always tone the background decor down accordingly.
