How much should an event planner/coordinator charge?!

Question:

How much should an event planner/coordinator charge?

I'm planning a corporate event and this is my first time doing an event on my own. I'm not sure as to how much I should charge my client. Is it better to do a flat fee? Should I do a percentage of the total cost? A combination? Only serious answers, please.

There are so many variables that you must consider: catering? how many will attend? Will there be alcohol? Do you need staff to wait on guests - since they all need money too - stuff like that. This venue is not always gonna get you good advice, since we do not have all the info.

Have fun. And if there are glitches (there WILL be) try to incorporate them into the event as though they were intended to be there - if you can!! or apologise in a letter after the event to your immediate superior person and reduce your fee a tad.

Find other event planners and find out what they charge.

Definitely research several event planners and see how much they charge and in what form. Also, do you have a budget for this event? You might want to consider what you are willing to spend and then take it from there.

I have heard 10-20% of the total budget is a usual amount for professionals.

Well...I would think that a percentage is in order...but then how do they know you are doing what you can to save them money? So maybe just an hourly flat fee? Do some research on local event planners.
