How can I impress my in-laws?!

Question:

How can I impress my in-laws?

This year is my first year as a married woman and I want to make a big impression on my in-laws at Thanksgiving by cooking something fantastic. Any ideas?

Answers:
Make a pecan pie. It looks beautiful and is easy to make. You can use the ready made Pillsbury crusts or make your own. There are many recipes on the net.

Well are you trying for the traditional dinner or something different? You could do a prime rib (with a basic garlic rub) w/ baked potatoes or scalloped potatoes (homemade of course) creamed corn, spring mix salad, espignole sauce, croissants, and homemade bread pudding with a wild turkey carmel sauce.

Make sure it is done right and economically have the event catered in by their favorite restaurant...

This way you can brag on all the money you saved in having it ordered in AND make sure they are fed up to their expectations!

Personally... I'd much rather look fabulous on paper than in person when it comes to food. Cooking is a very personal thing. My husbands grandparents love me to death, but she thinks my lasagna is discusting... and I happen to be a trained cook who specializes in Italian!

Some things like stuffing and sides are very personal and different is not always a good thing.

Spend your money and time on decoration and dazzle them that way. Chances are, your recipies will never be as good as her's, even if they actually are better.

Check out food.yahoo.com and foodnetwork.com

Both sites have very insightful videos and recipes that will help you bake the perfect Turkey, lump less mash potatoes, and delectable pumpkin pie.

As a side note, be sure to brine your turkey (even if the recipe does not call for it) because it makes your bird come out moist and delicious.

Cook their favorites per your husbands guidance and be yourself. Relax, you'll do just fine!!

This year for Thanksgiving (Canadian), my mother made sweet potatos with a twist and they were delicious!

Cook and then mash some sweet potatos (yams).
Season them with salt, pepper, brown sugar and a little cream to make them creamy (but not too creamy).
You can also use some nutmeg or cinnamon, depends on your tastes - experiment before the final dinner.
Place a generous spoonful in the center of a piece of Phyllo Pastry (available at the grocery store, usually frozen(defrost it before using)), and wrap it up. Place on a cookie sheet and bake until golden brown. You can serve as is or drizzle them with some maple syrup and toasted pecans. Yummy!!! Enjoy!!

If you're making stufffing, don't just use seasoned bread. Add some nuts, raisins, bacon, sausage, apple.....the sky is the limit. One year my mom made it with scallops, shrimp, crab and chestnuts. mmmm

1. clean house/bathroom, tub, sink bathroom floor especially around toilet, clean sides of toilet
2. clean living room, bedroom
A mother is more concerned about a clean living environment then the food you cook
Take your time and cook all of the foods you've cooked to marry that son of theirs with a little of your own home style flavor cooking and floor them
