Answers:
I think that picking a culture and using the food, decor, costumes, and entertainment of that culture would be fun. You can make any part of this a participatory event - like helping to decorate, cook, doing makeup/costuming, bringing theme-based items or food...

Japanese - anime or cosplay themes, geisha makeup, kimonos, work on your jujitsu moves, make sushi, cook your own tempura...

Mexican - making tamales is a fun group activity, and you can have some fun mariachi or Spanish guitar music going, maybe have a pinata...

Pirates - 'nuff said! (Pirates eat anything and have no table manners, right?) Sorry - that's the guy in me - yo-ho, yo-ho, the pirate's life for me..."toss me another turkey leg".

Sauces/Gravies - you can make/buy about a zillion different sauces for ladling over a food or for dipping. Do "Sauces Around the World". Make cheese fondue for dipping cauliflower, salsa for tortilla chips, fish sauce and spring rolls, melted chocolate and strawberries - mix and match. Make/buy some standard food items like plain chicken wings, veggies sticks/chunks, rice, noodles, crackers, fruit, cheese, and go to town. Have some seasonings and garnishes around too, like chopped nuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, croutons, red pepper flakes, vinegar, ketchup...whatever.

Games/entertainment can include variations on a trivia contest (cultural, musical, film, food...), finding favors/prizes around the house or yard based on clues/maps...

As part of the entertainment/participation, you could include something like the "make a beverage" or "make a dessert" contest - something not too hard, but with plenty of available ingredients. You could try and make the nastiest drink, the one that looks ugliest but tastes the best - award prizes in different categories maybe. Beverages are probably easier, just have a bunch of paper/plastic cups handy for sampling/voting. The winner has to write down the recipe.

I mentioned food/beverages a lot because I like to cook and eat. As a young picky eater, I learned that the best way to get what I wanted for food was how to make it myself. :-) Now I have a much broader appreciation of various foods, AND know how to make them. Yum.

I guess I went beyond the food thing a bit, but, I was trying to get in the mood for the whole thing. :-)

Ok, first you need to decide is it a sleepover? if so serve smores, hot chocolate, and other nightime foods.
or
a tropical theme, serving fruit smoothies, fruit kebabs, and other Hawaiian themed foods that you think of ( you could have this party by a pool)
or
a popstar party, serving cookies decorated to look like albums, milkshakes, and a star shaped cake! ( you could give cool sunglasses as a favor for this party)
there are many other themes, these are just a few. Have fun & happy b-day

The theme is DUMPLINGS

You can have oriental dumplings for an appetizer
Perogies, tortillini, etc for the main course
Veggie dish make all veggie "dumplings" (like veggies wrapped in cabbage or grape leaves)
Apple dumplings etc for dessert.

mexican:tacos,tortilla,salsa,n... many other foods.
french:baguett,snails,crosant,... wine,and other foods.
chinese:egg rolls,dumplings,tea,and other foods.

I LOVE Indian food, and I think it would be fun to have as your theme because probably not many people invited have tried it before. My favorite thing about Indian food is mango lassis (pronounced law-sees). It's plain yogurt mixed up in the blender with mango and sugar to make a smoothie that rocks your socks. You can have different kinds of curry and jasmine flavored rice (there should be mixes for all this stuff in the international foods aisle of your grocery store) and nan (pronounced non) bread. It'll be really original and your friends will always remember this party!

It would all depend on what YOU like! What is someplace that you have always wanted to go to? That could be a theme if it's like California or Hawaii. Or perhaps some place foreign and exotic like India or Thailand. Or do you have a favorite sport or do you like the country or the big city. You could have a high tea with finger sandwiches. You could BBQ, even if it's snowing where you are. Just take time to think about what would make YOU happy and let your imagination run!!!

All same colored foods- For example: Red jello, strawberry creme pie, red punch, red licorice, etc.

Secret Ingredient: If you really wanted to be unique, try to have everything with something the same of one ingredient. And then, have a prize for the winner who can guess what this "secret" ingredient is. For example: Ketchup. Make sure you find out everyone's food allergies, though, just in case. You can go to allrecipes.com and type in your ingredient in the ingredient page, which will bring up a whole bunch of recipes with that ingredient.

Fancy: Could go with the fancy appetizers, like deviled eggs, cheese and crackers, hors d'oeuvres, etc. complete with apple cider. The table setting could be candle-lit, with rose petals.

Desserts: Just have all desserts. Cookies, candy, cake, cupcakes, jello, you name it. Everyone is going to be sugar high at the party.
