Little snacks would work best. Like cheese and crackers and maybe even sausage would be a good quick treat. You could even make simple rice krispie treats too. Those are quick and simple as well.
make mini sandwiches
egg salad
roast beef
turkey
Drinks
egg nok
Chardonney
white wine
red wine is too fancy and doesn't suit a baby shower plus it stains
Pumpkin roll is really good and easy to make.
Peppermint tea, with pastel pink or blue candy canes, warm cider, and the usual soda or whatever else to drink. I had sweet and sour meatballs (in one of those catering pans) which was really good, chicken strips, any usual catered foods like mostacholi. For desserts you can do red and green colored cake...like a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, with green sprinkles or something. Don't know about religion but you can do a manger on the cake. Red and green holiday M&M's for center pieces...etc :-) Sounds like fun.
Here are some ideas:
Serve both black tea (orange pekoe or lady gray are good) and herbal tea (maybe cranberry for chistmas?) as people tend to have varrying tastes now.
baby carrots and spinach dip
mini pitas stuffed with alfalfa sprouts and tuna salad or egg salad
salmon rolls (herb & garlic philly cream cheese, fresh dill, thinly sliced cucumbers, thinkly sliced red onion marinated in white vinegar and drained, smoke salmon all rolled up in fajita bread and sliced into spirals)
and... an assortment of your christmas cookies for dessert
keep it simple.Serve finger foods. Quiche, mini meatballs, fruit, cheese. You can pick them up ready done.
Make it fun and go with a Nativity theme. It is all about the birth of a baby, right (the season AND the baby shower). You could choose standard party food and give it cutsie names like "manger muffins" and "it all started with a tiny little egg-nog."
Spiced tea (Bigelow's Constant Comment is nice), hot cocoa and petit fours decorated like little presents and little gingerbread men decorated in pink, blue and yellow. You could have glazed baby carrots, baked baby brie, baby swiss cheese and crackers and an array of teeny tiny quiche.
I did this about a month ago. It was Halloween/ Baby shower. I had 7 people. We had bbq coctail smokies, chips and dip and chocolate cake, I made a special punch and we also had some salsa and chips. I kept it real simple.
As far as theme I would do a few nativity sets b/c of the the shower and it being the Birth of Christ we will soon be celebrating. Or traditional boy /girl. Check oyut party city for ideas.
I have other ideas for you to serve. I would use pound cake, hot tea and cocoa, spinah dip and bread bowl, maybe some homemade candies in the place of a cake. Chocolate dipped strawberries and cherries.
