Pot luck etiquette...?!

Question: Pot luck etiquette!.!.!.!?
I've been invited to pot lucks where the food items were "assigned" to make sure there is a well balance meal!. However, I, as a single person was asked to bring the same quantity of food as a family of 4!. Should you bring the amount of food based on the number of people in your group!? How is the best way to handle this, i!.e!. when I'm asked to bring salad for 20 and a family of 4 is asked to bring another food item for 20!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Why not speak up!? Some people just do not get it, and unless you say something they never will!. You are not being cheap, but they are also not being sensitive!. This happened to a friend of mine, but it was a professional setting!. So, we just went together and we brought a dish together!. We did make a comment to the organizers who were surprised!. They were all married and making good money!.!.!.!.we had just gotten out of college and were not so secure in our fortunes!.

If they are people that you would like to continue to socialize with, they will understand and make accommodations!. You will probably be asked to bring something not so spendy!. If you still have problems, ask for recipe suggestions!. Someone else may be able to help you out with a great thrifty recipe to take!. There ARE inexpensive recipes out there, and with today's economic woes I believe they will be in vogue soon enough!. I can hear my mama's depression-era recipes flipping their way in my cookbook!

Good luck and I really hope they are empathetic with your situation!. You are not asking too much, and you just need some understanding!.!.!.speak up and let them know!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think being asked to provide for 20 is a lot to ask!. If I was the host, I would ask more than one attendee to bring a type of salad - in a serving size that was reasonable!. Then, I would provide the rest of what was missing!.

I would probably take the suggestion of the other writer and make a big green salad using 2 big bags of prepackaged salad and adding things like tomatos, cucumbers, olives, cheese, hard boiled eggs etc!. This way, it looks like you are providing a lot!.

Or, I would prepare another type of salad of a reasonable size and bring that!. You can always count on there being someone at the party who will not touch the salads anyway (like my husband for example)!. The host surely isn't going to say anything to you if your salad was only 8 servings!.

Good luck!! Www@FoodAQ@Com

I normally am the one assigning foods for our potlucks!. I generally assign singles or couples with no children less expensive sides rather than main dishes to compensate for this same thing!.

In a pot luck you are bringing food specifically to share so you need to have a sufficient quantity!. We've tried to do it different ways but it just doesn't work unless you have set quantities to make sure there's enough for everyone!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, if you take enough salad for one person, you might as well not bother!. There will not be enough there to mess with at a pot luck!. Just remember that if everyone brings a 'large enough' dish to share, then there will be plenty of food!.
We have block parties in my neighborhood!. We are asked to either bring a side dish or a dessert depending on our house number!. Everyone brings their own 'meat' for the grill and there is always enough for everyone!. In this manner you are assured that there will not be 7 desserts and no side dishes!.
If you don't want to make a large dish of whatever you are asked to bring, then don't attend!. It is normal etiquette to bring enough to share!.!.!.!.!.!.not just enough for one!.
Is it fair!? I suppose not!. However, you need to remember that you will be having more than one type of food!. If everyone takes a spoon of this and a spoon of that, you need enough to go around!. also, not everyone will eat your salad!. They may prefer to have 2 scoops of something else and no salad!. It is not that big of a deal to make enough to share!.
If you don't want to share, then stay home!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

We have never had it assigned!?I would make sure i just find buy one get free bags of salad and take what they asked me!.Maybe you can find a cheap bag of 1!.50 `carrots and a cucumber diced well and throw in!.
Is it right!?no!.but at one time or another you will most likely show up somewhere you were suppose to bring food and forget it or didnt realize it!.or maybe if there are some extras you can fill up a plate and take home for evenings meal the next night!.
Normally when they assign it they dont tell you how many people to make it for either they just say its your turn for salad and they do like three people w salads!.
if you look through the sale ads you can find some buy one get one free not sure where you live but winn dixie always does this!.
good luck!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Usually the amount to bring isn't specified, but if you're given salad, then they may be giving you the cheapest item to bring - to compensate for only 1 of you:) If they asked you to bring a main dish for 20, I'd bring up the fact that there's only ONE of you, and the amount you're spending wouldn't be fairWww@FoodAQ@Com

I usually take fresh fruit or a green salad plus a dessert to my family reunion!. Whatever is left over gets composted when I get back home, so I'm grateful I didn't cook up enough meat to serve 20 people!. There's always a percentage of people who come empty-handed, I'm ashamed to say, so it all works out!.

It's more about the visiting than the food anyway!. Take a salad like this one; http://www!.recipezaar!.com/11156 It's not overly expensive and if it doesn't feed 20, well so what!.
