A checker board inside of the cake is always a crowd pleaser and very easy to do. You stripe alternating colors of batter into a cake round and then stack them, a 3 tier cake looks really neat when you cut a slice. This would be cool for a birthday party because you can pick your 2 favorite colors and use those.

Happy Birthday!

If you totally can't picture what I am talking about, here is a link

Your not suppose to make your own birthday cake!!!
But good luck its always fun decorating a cake.

aww yeah I agree, you shouldn't have to make your own cake on your birthday! especially your 16th!

It should be something cute and sweet, fruity. strawberries or mangoes!

(have a good b-day!)

you could make 2 sheets of cake. make it 2 layer with some filling on the inside. before you frost or put the filling use a knife to cut out the shape of 16 than put a filling place the other 16 on top of the other than cover sides and top with frosting, than spinkle with sprinkles or candy. Happy sweet 16th.

Try a store that sells Wilton Cake supplies. Wilton makes edible "glitter" that comes in all kinds of colors. Using a white cake mix tint (using food coloring) the batter a favorite color -- maybe pink. Frost the cake with white frosting, then cover the sides of the cake with pink edible glitter. Add your sparkler candles to the top and you have an inexpensive but very sparkly cake!. Happy 16th Birthday!

Cupcakes are so cute and you can be really creative with them. There are tons of cake and frosting choices you can go with, or mix and match. The sky is the limit when it comes to decorating and serving them.

If I was turning 16 again...or in a few odd years when my daughter turns 16 I'd like to make a cupcake tower.

here are two different recipes from bettycrocker

Cheesecake puts the ultimate finish on a special meal. Here’s how to get great results:
Use a springform pan, which is ideal for baking cheesecake (and can be used for other desserts too).

Follow cheesecake directions carefully to avoid overbeating ingredients, which can make a cheesecake collapse from incorporating too much air.

Help prevent cracking in your cheesecake during baking by placing a shallow pan of hot water on the bottom oven rack.

Cheesecakes can crack from the shock of cold air that enters when you open the oven door during baking. Wait until the cheesecake nears the end of baking time to “peek.”

Cheesecakes bake at lower temperatures than regular cakes to keep them from shrinking.

How can you tell if cheesecake is done? Touch the top lightly, or gently shake the pan. The center may be just firm to the touch or jiggle slightly, but it will set during chilling. For best results, don’t poke the tip of a knife into the cheesecake to test for doneness because the hole can cause cracking.
Cooling & Serving Cheesecake

Follow these tips for picture-perfect cheesecake servings:

Cool the cheesecake at room temperature for 30 minutes, or as directed, before placing it in the refrigerator.

Then refrigerate uncovered for 2 to 3 hours, or until chilled, before serving. This allows moisture to disperse during chilling instead of pooling on the warm cheesecake surface.

Finally, after chilling, cover the cheesecake so that it doesn't dry out and absorb odors from nearby foods. Store cheesecake in the refrigerator.

Run a metal spatula along the side crust of a chilled cheesecake to loosen it from the pan. Wait until the cheesecake is well-cooled to avoid separating the crust from the cheesecake during cooling.

For a perfectly cut cheesecake, first dip the knife into water, and clean it after each cut. Or hold a length of dental floss taut between your hands, and pull the floss down through the cheesecake, making a clean cut across the diameter of the cake.

try pound cake

I just did my sisters 16th birthday cake on the weekend and it was supercheap!! I made a chocolate cake in the shape of the number 16(i.e a loaf tin x2 + a 'donut' looking tin). I covered that with chocolate icing and after letting it set a little, i place marshmallow frangipani's on in a various layout and also some things called cachous (little silver balls - they're edible). To make the marshmallow flowers you cut them in half so that you still have the circle shape and cut them in half again. you then dip them in sugar of jelly crystals to stop them being sticky then you get the four corners and stick them together! It looks so great...really feminine to! And i did sparklers and candles! It looked really really good...i'm doing it again this weekend but in a plain square shape and putting the cachous as like a ribbon pinned around the edge of the cake! Experiment & have fun!

have an angel food cake with white and pink butter frosting

how about a giant cake with a male stripper jumping out of it! lol
