Traditionally, can small cups that come with saucers be used as coffee cups or just tea cups?!

Question: Traditionally, can small cups that come with saucers be used as coffee cups or just tea cups!?
I'm not talking about espresso cups, but larger cups - betwen espresso cup size and mug size!. Would it be good etiquette to serve coffee in such cups, or are they traditionally just tea cups!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
They can be used for both tea and coffee!.

However, if you really want to stick to old European traditions then you should have two different sets of these small cups with saucers - one set for tea, the other one for coffee!. There is no difference in the volume of fluid that these cups can hold, but traditionally they do have different shapes!. Cups for tea are quite wide (resembling a bowl)!. The cups for coffee on the other hand are tall and narrow to keep the coffee hot!.

Having said all this - I think no-one really cares about these super-fine details any more!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There was a time before those vulgar, over-sized mugs, when genteel people drank their coffee (and tea) from cups and saucers!. The tea was made in and served from a pretty pot; the coffee was served from a proper coffee service, perhaps even a silver one, not the coffee maker carafe!. The cups and saucers matched the dinner service and coffee was served after dinner at the dining table!.!.!.

I think it's ok to use it, as long as you feel comfortable with it!. Don't care what people think, you may use it if you feel nice with it!. By the way, try with hot water first, if nothing happen to the tea cup, then it's ok to serve coffee!. When you wash it, use the warmer water, or perhaps don't directly wash the cup after you've finished -wait for around 10 minutes until the cup is no longer hot, because coffee is hot, and if you wash it with cold water, the tea cup will easily break!.

They can be used for both coffee or tea!. I'm sure this size cup is what the "coffee pot manufacturer's" are using for measuring = I use mugs at home - and I sure don't get 12 cups of coffee!.

I have been served coffee in the "tea" cup you are talking about in many different situations, : restaurants, private diners etc!.

Their your dishes - use them anyway you want -Www@FoodAQ@Com

Our coffee shops have been using small cups for coffee!. Not sure since when it got started but it is said to taste nicer as it keep the coffee hot and thick!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
