What is the origin of pigs in the blankets?!

Question:

What is the origin of pigs in the blankets?

how did the term get started and where?

Answers:
The earliest written reference I know of is Betty Crocker's 1957 classic Cooking for Kids.

I remember eating them for breakfast in the early 1950's as a special treat. At that time they were made from rolled fresh sausage, without casing, which was baked lightly, drained and then baked again encased in a homemade dough. My favorite aunt called them "pigs in a blanket" and that was 1954.

Sausage rolls which are basically the same thing as pigs date back to 1600's London and evolved much like the "sandwich" did. Putting a hunk of meat between dough was a no-brainer when you had to go out to work the fields.

I think you would be hard pressed to find the first person that coined the name "pigs in a blanket".

No idea.

unknown, but very interesting question

I remember eating them in the early 70's I think my mom made them from one of those better homes and gardens , or betty crocker, or one of those cookbooks. I think they are called that because thats what they resemble, and because hotdogs are made from pork sometimes. they probably started in the 60's or 70's tho. back when everybody was entertaining all the time.

they originated in Asia. they used fish then the polish used it for sausages and finally America put a hot dog in it

Here is a wiki article about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pigs_in_bla...

But I find it unusual that what you all refer to is NOT what my family calls Pigs in the Blanket
Our is like a meatloaf mix, mixed with rice, all rolled into a nice piece of cabbage. It is often cooked with other vegetables and has a red sauce - like a tomato soup- but very thin- not a thick sauce. I guess other people call these things Cabbage Rolls. (makes more sense to me)

pig's in the blanket's ,started in the diner's along route-66 ,somewhere between oklahoma and new mexico ,somtime during the early 60's !now,
pig in a blanket , was a medium lenght sausage, usually pork, and that was introduced in the texas, arkansas area round late 60's the diffrence between the two are the BLANKET'S ARE HOTCKES AND THE BLANKET IS A PASTRYDOUGH-WRAP! (HEAR-SY FROM A TRUCKER-UNCLE !!)

This little piggy went to the market, this little piggy stayed home..(wrapped in his little piggy blanket).wee.wee.wee...?

At first I thought you were talking about my brother and his wife.Sorry i dont know about the food thing.

When I grew up it was a hamburger mixture with rice and you put it in a partically cooked cabbage leaf and cooked them. She put saurekraut on top of them and we ate the saurekraut on top of cooked potatoes. Ours was not made with any tomatoes.
