Carving a pumpkin and preserving it with shellack?
I want to carve out a pumpkin and shellack the inside and use it as a receptacle for cards at my wedding reception. I just want to coat the inside with something so that the cards don't get moist. if you can think of anything other than shellack i'd appreciate that too. it doesn't need to last very long, just two days... the day before and the day of.

Have you considered a funkin instead of a regular pumpkin? You can do a very intricate carving and keep it around as a momento.
I definitely recommend the funkins as opposed to the ones available at Michaels which are not at all easy to carve.
Sounds like a cute idea, but maybe you should reconsider using a real pumpkin. There are some realistic looking faux pumpkins out there, some that are even made for holding things in. If you are adamit about using a real pumpkin though, I am sure that shellac would work, just concerned about the odor would be to pungent and may either remain on your cards or carry over and bother some of your guests.
the insides might be too wet/moist for shellack to set. i'd try one of the fake pumpkins and not worry about the mess.

Lining it with saran wrap would seem to be the fastest, cleanest and simplest way to do that.
