ACTUALLY...The custom of throwing rice came from the Buddhist...(primarily Asian religion). This tradition was thought to increase fertility of the couple. The US on the other hand, has converted to throwing bird seed. Birds where eating the rice left on the ground and dying. This is because, uncooked rice absorbs 3 times it weight in water. When birds eat rice, they eat more than their bodies can handle and literally dehydrate themselves to death. Basically all the fluid in their bodies is absorbed by the rice and they bloat themselves to death. Cool huh?
actually, it is illegal to throw rice at Amercan weddings now because the birds would come and eat the rice and then get sick and die. So now you can't do that anymore. I don't know what they do in China
I don't know if it's still the custom to throw rice. Did you know that it is recommended that wedding participants not throw rice because it kills birds that eat it off the ground. The rice expands in their little stomachs and kills them.
Hamburgers would be an improvement for the birds anyway.
