Go to Wilton.com to the message boards. They have lots of ideas on there. What is your son into?
My son was (and still) into Bob the Builder so I made him a Bob the Builder cake. His second birthday was Thomas the Tank Engine. His third Birthday was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His fourth Birthday was Spiderman. His last birthday was a dinosaur.
Hope this helps

Have Tigger or Winnie-the-Pooh decorated on top.
Make something yummy that you will enjoy. Your son isn't going to remember it, and though he might stick his face in it, you are the one who will savior it.
The fun for a 1st birthday is to taste your first cake and get all messy and stick your child's hands and maybe face in it. My neices had their own individual 6" cake yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It doesnt have to be anything fancy. Its all about the pictures and the experience.

most of your supermarkets carry baby cakes. They are nice and small and inexpensive.
I would get him his own personal size cake or cupcake, something he can dig his hands into and then provide a bigger cake for the guests.
Baby's Bib Cake
Baby's Booties
Puppy Dog Cake
Pail of Sand Cake
Balloon Cake
What You Need
Baked sheet cake
Vanilla frosting
Food Coloring
Couple of small bowls
Knives or small spatulas (for spreading frosting)
Icing in a tube or licorice strings (for balloon strings)
Round baked cookies (sugar or Snickerdoodles work great)
How To Make It
Frost your baked and cooled sheet cake with vanilla frosting.
Put a very small amount of frosting in a bowl. Add food coloring, mixing as you add, to obtain the desired shade. Repeat in additional bowls for each balloon color you wish to create.
Frost the cookies and add to the cake (see photo).
Use licorice strings or icing in a tube to create strings for the balloons.
Get him a cheap individual cake that he can make a mess of from the Walmart bakery. Then get a nicer cake for the rest of the grownups. I really hate those kids parties where the parents expect the older guests to enjoy the same stuff as the toddler! :)
Alot of grocery store bakeries will do a 9' round cake free for a baby's first birthday.
Somthing really yummy and that has a teddy bear with baloones .

Try this train cake pan and the recipe that comes with it. The pan is pricey but you can use it for years.
My sis got it for her kids. The cake recipe is excellent and I am not a big cake fan.
For frosting for the little guy just add a little food color to some cool whip. It will be less messy to clean him up, and does not have so much sugar in it. (you can use regular frosting for your guests, if you like.)
Decorate it with the gel frosting you can get in any grocery if you want a quick version or go all out as shown in the catalog. As he gets older he can help you decorate his train.
Enjoy and congrats.
