Christmas evening menu ideas?

My whole family has a celebration together on Christmas Eve - then on Christmas I always have my parents over for a nice dinner. I am trying to decide what to serve this year - what are your ideas?


Answers:
We came up with this menu by accident, and now my family insists on it. Easy, elegant and not too expensive:
Chicken Cordon Bleu
Green vegetable
Stuffed tomatoes
Croissant rolls

I have the recipes if you want them. If you don't know, the chicken is simply a boneless breast pounded flat, a layer of Swiss cheese, a layer of thin sliced ham, a small chunk of cream cheese, rolled up inside a slice of bacon and baked. Wonderful taste and all do-ahead.

maybe something like
pumpkin or chicken and sweet corn soup as an entree with homemade garlic cheese and chive bread
roast chicken with honey carrots, cauliflour and broc with cheese sauce, gravy, peas and corn...
and make a nice cheesecake or something for dessert!

we are going through the same thing, determining on what to eat this year for christmas since Thanksgiving was so close. We didn't want to do the whole turkey, vegs and etc.. My sister is hosting this year and we decided to do a 6 meal course, starting with simple appetizers, so maybe consider that? We are going to serve something new and fancy but tasty!

I have decided to do appetizers, then serve soup, veggies, main meal, fruit plate then end with desserts/drinks

We haven't fine tune it.. but it is gonna be fun! It gives me a chance to bond more time with my sister. :)

chicken, pitatoes, scalp corn, roles those are my favorite foods my grandma makes and deviled eggs are my favorite that my mom makes

Have the traditional Christmas type dinner and then just have finger foods, like different cheeses and salami and crackers and wine and maybe a little champagne. I envy you that you still have family to have with you on Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Our family always does ham on Christmas and then the typical mashed potatoes...but you could always do something like twice baked potatoes or a special type of mashed potatoes. An appetizer I absolutly love is those little smokies wrapped in bacon and brown sugar on top of it...bake at 350 until brown sugar carmalizes. I would recommend something light. Finger foods.

Core a loaf of pumpernickle bread and put spinach dip in it. (add some diced water chestnuts to the dip) little ham sandwiches with a variety of condiments; mustards, horseradish sauce, pickles....get some bread sticks and wrap each one in one slice of bacon, sprinkle with romano cheese and bake until bacon is crisp. Place bacon bread sticks in a nice basket lined with a colorful linen napkin. Cheese trays. Veggie trays. Fruit trays...with fruit dip. You could actually serve some sort of a light soup as well that would go nice with the mini ham sandwiches.

Small desserts like baklva or nut breads and cookies. You don't want anything heavy on Christmas Eve if you're fixing a large dinner on Christmas day. *S* Merry Christmas!

We are Scandinavian(Icelandic & Danish)/Welsh. Our big celebration is on Christmas Eve. We alway have fish - roll mops - pickled herring as an appetizer washed down with some aquavit. I hated this but tastes change and I am introducing this to my sons. We have Rutmus which is a potatoe/turnip dish served with lingon berry sauce. Let me know if you want to see the recipe and I will add it to the post.
On the Welsh side we have a dessert , Cyflaith, which is actually an activity - toffee pulling (or taffy). We skipped this a couple of Christmases and have brought it back now that the kids are older.
All this with the usual turkey and stuffing.

Our traditional Christmas eve dinner was steak, shrimp and twice baked potatoes. When my oldest daughter married her husband a couple of years ago, we switched to raclett.

It's a tabletop electric grill where each person grills their own meat and or seafood. Underneath is little individual pans where you place sliced cooked potatoes with a slice of raclette cheese on top & broil. You serve the meat & seafood with a variety of dipping sauces. It's a lot of fun, something I had never heard of before

I know lots of people who like garlic spear ribs. My Mom always makes a fantastic cod au gratin with crusty rolls. You could have trays of sandwiches, cocktail weenies, cheese and crackers, chips and dip. One year, my sister in law did up a smoked salmon roll, it was amazing. A nice bowl of punch. For dessert, trifles, brownies and christmas cookies of course. Now you're making me hungry.. I know what I'm making x-mas eve..
