A bunch of small things are usually least expensive and easy to make. Try deviled eggs, stuffed mushrooms, and cheese and crackers. If you have a Sam's Club, Costco, or another bulk warehouse locally, they always sell little appetizers in the freezer section. Depending on how many guests you have inviting, it could be very inexpensive.

homemade chicken pot pie for the main course

Sam's club is a great place for appetizers, but if you want to make them for yourself.....

deviled eggs
crab dip served in a breadbowl with crackers
shrimp wrapped in bacon
bite sized filet mignon on skewers

how bout chicken everyone likes chicken

I would do a ham. Not hard to cook (just long) and taste amazing.
