Dinner Party?!
Dinner Party?
My husband and I are having some freinds over for dinner, and in traditional southern fashion, I am going to make a giant pot of gumbo (chicken and sausage, we have some picky eaters). I need a little hor d'ourve to serve beforehand. Any suggestions?

ALSO: I would like to avoid any type of alcohol as I am pregnant. I would also like something that would compliment the gumbo. Thanks!

With gumbo? That's kind of hard. Oyesters wouldn't be bad, but with picky eaters around... This Red Pepper Dip sounds good.
* 1 (7 ounce) jar roasted red peppers, drained and diced
* 3/4 pound shredded Monterey Jack cheese
* 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
* 1 cup mayonnaise
* 1 tablespoon minced onion
* 1 clove garlic, minced
* 2 tablespoons prepared Dijon-style mustard
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. In a small baking dish, mix the roasted red peppers, Monterey Jack cheese, cream cheese, mayonnaise, onion, garlic and Dijon-style mustard.
3. Bake in the preheated oven 20 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly browned. Serve warm.

This sounds all right also, a baked brie appetizer with a twist. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/brie-cheese...
Also, super easy, I take a block of softened cream cheese, serve with raspberry salsa (or, if you can find it, raspberry chipolte sauce) poured over it alongside crackers. Yum.
I love hummus dip with some garlic pita bread chips and a relish tray of different vegetables. Also, you could do a fruit and cheese platter with a couple different types of wine to go with it.
-hot & spicy Buffalo chicken wings, crackers with spicy chutney on top of garlic cream cheese, anti-pasto on crackers, spinach dip and bread, nachos with black olives, onions, halepenoes, red peppers, and tomato with melted chedder cheese on top (served with Guacamali, Salsa, and sour cream sauces), calimari with sour cream dill sauce, sun dried tomatos on top of melted Bree Cheese with sour doe bread pieces to spread on top of, etc... When I think of southern, I believe you want spicey hor d'ourves to serve to keep with this kind of theme.
You'll have cracker with the gumbo, so I'd not serve chips or crackers as part of an hor d'orve. Some vegie type tray? Sandwich style hor'd'ourve? I wish I had some good recipes to share, but I'd lean toward those types to compliment the gumbo.
HOW ABOUT SOME BAKED BRIE
heres a way to get a dinner menu with your gumbo---i saw this not to long ago on emeril live cook show---just look up his gumbo recipe and that will give you the menu he used to complete the meal. other foods he served with his gumbo all looked good.
I found a website that has an extensive list of cajun-style appetizers, from a cheese dip to cheese puffs (cheese is always a safe bet with picky eaters!). Check it out... maybe you'll find something to compliment your gumbo.

Have fun with your dinner party!
You can never go wrong with the simple deviled egg! Everyone loves them!!! You don't need a recipe...hardboil some eggs, peel them and slice them in half lengthwise. Pop the yolks into a bowl and just mash them up with a bit of mayo, a dash of prepared mustard, a spoon full of pickle relish (sometimes I just use the juice), some finely chopped onions, maybe some chopped black olive, salt & black pepper, and a dash or two of hot sauce, and then spoon it back into the egg whites. I like to sprinkle some paprika or Season-All on the top, and maybe some sliced olives.
