How about a plain white place card, and quickly sketch an onion shape in one corner? Or tie a green onion to a plain white place card? That way you can use the L/O place cards when your theme changes. Or, just write their name w/ a Sharpie pen on the side of an onion!

What software do you have? If you have access to clip art - find a cute onion, personalize with names. You will need to cut them out, but would be very unique. Make them double sided so you don't have to have the holders. (Just fold in half)
do a clip art search for an onion and cut it out. that'll be easier and cheaper than trying to find them. otherwise check ebay.
I would make them if I were you. Get cream or white colored corrogated bulletin board borders. Cut into approximately 12-15" strips (maybe shorter if you like) - Next start rolling it up. When you get to the end - glue it . Now you should have what looks like a slice of onion - take some natural colored rafia and glue a small amount at the top for the roots of the onion. Then just attach a small card (approximately 3 x 2) for your name card.
Find a photo of an onion on the internet....print it out a bunch of times.....spray glue it to stiff board.....put the persons name on it in gold or silver pen
