Can someone please give me the definision to the word, hor'dourve?!

Question:

Can someone please give me the definision to the word, hor'dourve?

My office is having a Christmas party. Everyone is to bring only one hor'dourve. There is one particular person that does not understand what only bring one hor'dourve means. She likes to bring large helpings of food that no one eats, and is left behind for others to clean up. I'd like to toss in the definision of hor'dourve for this person. Maybe she will listen this time.

Sorry for misspelling the word definition

In North America, hor d'oeuvre are hot or cold appetizers which may be eaten before a meal to whet the appetite, or if as a selection, on their own for a cocktail party. They are generally no more than 2 or 3 bites in size and can be eaten standing up, preferably without the aid of cutlery.

The definition in Europe is somewhat different.

Hors'd oeuvre is like an appetizer. (Amuse the mouth) HOWEVER they are different. Hors'd oeuvres are served before a meal, usually passed and a ONE or TWO bite thing. An appetizer is served before a meal but is usually plated.

Examples of Hors'd oeuvres:
Pigs in a blanket
Mini quiches
shrimp
cheese and crackers
Crudite (vege tray)

Hope this helps!

Think small finger food, or something that can be served on a tray or platter, something you can eat with your pointer finger and thumb, and is gone in 2-3 bites. No silverware required.

its basically a pre meal snack

I'm just replying because you need to use the dictionary more ... you spelled definition wrong twice.
[Not trying to be rude, just thought you should know]

It is actually an appetizer, type of snacks which is very popular as office party snacks. Giving below two recipes :

hors d'oeuvre Pronunciation (?r d?rv)
n. pl. hors d'oeuvres (?r d?rvz) or hors d'oeuvre
An appetizer served before a meal.
[French hors d'uvre : hors, outside + de, of + uvre, (the main) work.]

It's usually served on a small tray the size of a cake pan lid, you don't need silverware, but small paper plates are nice.

You may want to think about hurting your coworker's feelings. Maybe they really like to cook and it is/was a tradition in her family to make plenty of food for everyone. Is it worth offending her or hurting her feelings ?

(Of course, if she is always bringing burned food or leftover blended casseroles (like pulling stuff out of her fridge and throwing it all together, this needs to be STOPPED . LOL . )

it is the french meaning of first serving.

Look, i can't give you the latin breakdown of the word, but in plain english it means, STARTER, I think in the context that they are using it for the christmas party, they mean everyone should bring fingerfoods.
