Cup cakes as a birthday party cake. How do I do this?!

Question:

Cup cakes as a birthday party cake. How do I do this?

My 3 yr old wants a Princess themed birthday party. I want to utilize cupcakes as the cake. Any ideas?

Answers:
This is a great idea, kids and adults love cupcakes. The trick is to make the cakes very pretty and it is easier then you might think. You can get a lot of cake supplies such as pastry bags, icing and sugar decorations. personality, I hate to use plastic as decorations, you can easily make your own flowers (also sold in the craft store)
Remember to keep them all the same because kids tend to want what they can't have. However, a fun thing you could do is fill the cup cakes with icing using a pastry bag, one of them could be a different color filling. The child who gets that one, wins a prize.!

P.S. I am a pastry chef!

Spread a thin layer of buttercream icing on a big platter, and cram the cupcakes tightly into the icing. Then decorate as if it were a solid cake. (you may go look at one at a grocery store's bakery to see how they do it.)

You could get that 24-cupcake stand that looks like a tiered cake (Wal-Mart has them). Then decorate the cupcakes in pink icing with pink sugar crystals so it will sparkle.

Get a cupcake stand/server like the one here:

The decorate the cupcakes with pink and lavender icing, edible glitter, and possibly, princess decorations like these:

Make individual cupcake and ice them with pink, white and yellow icing. You can buy edible decals of the Princess' or buy Princess suckers and put 1 in each of the cupcakes.

I've seen three tiered cupcake holders at Target and Michael's craft stores. You just place the cupcakes on it and it looks really cute.

The grocery stores in my area also sell cupcake "cakes". They place a bunch of cupcakes on a cardboard rectangle and space them close together. These look cute too, and you can get them decorated any way you'd like.

This is such a great idea that we are going to do this for my son's birthday. No mess and no fuss!

You could also go the easy route...at Michaels they have a cup cake tree, you just make cupcakes like regular, and then stick them in the tree...it turns out really cute, and isn't that expensive. Good luck and happy birthday to your daughter!

maybe use the cupcakes as balloons, and licorice as the strings (pull and peel kind). or, theme the party as a princess party, and in the top of the cupcake, for each girl, put a little sparkly ring in the top. so they can pick which cupcake and ring they want to wear.

just put the cupcakes side by side in even rows and frost! decorate as you would a cake! good luck!

best thing in the world is this..most kids only want them for the icing but put a twist on them. I do this all the time. Bake them in ice cream cones. (the ones with flat bottoms) you can get them in the grocery store. Fill them up about 3/4 the way full and just sit them inside a flat pan and bake. Same time and temp. No adjustments. Then just take them out and lightly frost the top. They will be the talk of the party and the kids will just adore them. Have fun and live a little.

If you look at your local bakery department, they sell these all the time. It looks like they group all of the cupcakes together, and spread frosting layers over all of them then decorate it like a cake.
