Ideas for my Dad's 60th Birthday party?
All kids (6) , grandkids (12) will be there. Lots of friends, business associates and professionals as well. He is on the board of a college, so nothing embarrassing please. We were thinking of dressing the grandkids in clothes representing each decade. We are lost and need ideas for something really special.

Everyone there will have the honoree in common - try some easy little games that will get people talking and reminiscing. Ideas:
Trivia questions about the honoree - small prizes for correct answers. What is his/her favorite color, middle name, first car, wedding date, favorite snack food, etc???
Post pictures from all stages of the person's life all over the place, and have people guess the year it was taken, and/or what was the occasion. You could number the photos and have a cheat sheet or do it as another contest.
Have a sign-in poster where folks can write their good wishes. It can then be framed and hung as a nice remembrance.
Enjoy!
first of all, why does your dad have a birthday party when he is 60
just make a regular party because that sound boring
he is that old ew but get him a rad or old people shirt or just get him a beautiful cake.
If I were a kid, I'd be mortified to be dressed up from some other decade!
How about a nice "Open House" with food that can sit (lasagna, crockpot soups, chilis, chowders, side dishes), so folks can come and go. It will give your dad more time to visit w/ each of them anyway, and guests will feel they can linger a bit.
Well for my dad(He just turned 60) we did the average birthday party because most people who are 60 dont like it to be known. But some ideas are:
I like the one about the kids.
Getting him an toy from when he was a kid.
And well thats all i can think of
all those people are gonna be there, yet u have nothing planned?
oh okaay?
well, he must have been born around 1946 so growing up he probably remembers his childhood years from 1956-1966 best so maybe a themed party from that time. Research the news. You could hunt down old magazines and decorate like that time, toys and things from that time too, maybe hairstyles from that era, all kinds of things etc.... just a thought.
If you have enough time, get together a heap of photos and scan them and put together a movie maker presentation complete with his fav music, you can include special times in his life, like his wedding day, him with his kids and grandkids. Put it on to a DVD and play it on the night. My mum has one of these and loves it.
For a distinguished gentleman like your father sounds, I'd go with a formal open house with hors d'oerves. That way he can mix and people can just mingle and talk.
For the serious part, have people write down favorite memories of him when you give the speech.
And for fun, find some pics of him as a kid, or growing up, or even as a veteran. Have those blown up and around the room for nostalgia.
And the family should definitely do a toast or toasts. Maybe some of his colleagues would like to make a toast too?
You should roast your father. all the kids can give their speech and have fun!
Take old pictures and memories and put them on a DVD as a movie for him with his favorite songs in the background
