What the Hell goes on a relish tray?!

Question:

What the Hell goes on a relish tray?

Have to bring a relish tray to xmas dinner is it just pickles or veggies too? did they ask me to bring this cuz I am a terrible cook? does anyone actually eat off the relish tray or does it just look good on a table? do I need a special tray?

Answers:
Hello Dear...

Divided glass dishes somewhere between 9" and 12" in diameter are appropriate for "relish trays"...

In formal settings, they should include any number of "pickled" things, but no fresh veggies. Spiced apple rings, pickles, Pickled peppers, spiced pickled pears, pickled mushrooms, etc....

It can be done rather nicely, and can be as simple or extravagant as you wish. The tray must be divided, however, and the items well drained to avoid mixing of flavours.

If it is appealing enough, yes, people will eat off of it.

If you are new to the group, it is not an insult, as women tend to get "territorial" over what they like to make, and each one has their favourites which they will not give up. Usually, it is best to bring an additional item, like a dessert, to show them that you can actually cook as well. Is there a dessert that you are particularly good at making?? Bring that as well as the "relish tray".

Namaste,

--Tom

P.S. Don't forget the little serving forks for the tray....it'll show the hostess that you have a little class.

appetizers and/or relish...duh

I'm thinking relish.

relish

Carrots cut up real nice, olives, celery, pickles, artichoke hearts, stuff like that.

You can put it on a glass platter or most grocey stores have covered aluminum trays you can buy for cheap....relish tray...pickles, olives, carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower and dip....voila!

sorry, I don't know if can cook or not, but people enjoy relish trays, you can use carrots, pickles, cauliflower, radishes, peppers, olives, all kinds of good stuff. It usually served on a big round tray, you can buy them at Walmart or Target, etc

Creole Relish Tray
Recipe from Everyday Is A Party Cookbook, by Emeril Lagasse, with Marcelle Bienvenu and Felicia Willett, published by William Morrow, 1999
Ingredients
1/2 pound green beans, ends trimmed
1 pound baby carrots
1 head cauliflower, cut into florets
1/2 pound celery, cut into 3-inch pieces
1 (1-pound) jar Kalamata olives packed in vinegar brine and olive oil
1 (11.5-ounce) jar pickled peperoncini
1 (16-ounce) jar pickled hot cherry peppers
1 (10-ounce) jar pickled imported Spanish Queen olives stuffed with pimientos
1 (8-ounce) jar pickled Holland cocktail onions
20 fresh basil leaves
6 sprigs fresh thyme
6 sprigs fresh oregano
2 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 cup olive oil

I don't think you need a "special" tray. It may typically be a long, skinny tray - shouldn't matter. Maybe they asked you to bring this because Somebody should - or perhaps they thought it would be easier, less stressful, for you.
Carrot and celery sticks, olives, pickles.
Deviled eggs, if you're so inclined.

You could use any plate, platter, or tray as long as you make sure you get it back after the party. A good variety of items to put on would be... dill pickle spears, bread and butter slices, green olives, black olives, pickled vegetables (they come in jars... cauliflower, carrots, etc.) Personally, I don't like anything on relish trays besides dill pickles, but I guess other people do, or they wouldn't have asked you to bring it.

You should put on the trey anything that you think is appropriate and if anyone says anything about it boot them in the old wazoo

Anthing you want. You can put baby carrots, celery sticks, cauliflower and broccoli flowerettes, you can put cubed cheese, a dip that you like.

You can make a fruit or meat tray instead.

Your tray can be anything you like, but I would prefer to use a disposable one, so you can leave it or thow it a way. Available in the baking section of a grocery store.

I suggest to put lettuce leaves on the bottom of an aluminum tray. Buy a dip and put it in the center and circle your veggie's around it.

OR you can just go to grocery store and buy a predone one. Relish tray can be a lot of work. :)

Sounds worse than it really is...Basically attractively arranged raw veggies, carrot sticks, or baby carrots, celery sticks, pepper slices, radishes, things of that nature or as you said a variety of pickles:dills, sweet pickles, olives etc.Just a fairly large platter type plate...preferrably something you don't mind not getting back so you don't have to worry about collecting it at the end of the evening. Don't stress it and think of your luck at not having to make something time consuming.Have a Merry Christmas!

Whatever you like to munch on....black olives, blue cheese stuffed green olives. If you think they asked you to bring this because they think you can't cook then I would go for EXOTIC relishes.....artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, white asparagus...and yes, it has to look good on the table, but you can make it look good on an aluminum tray, just buy some of that flat leaf lettuce and cover the whole tray with the lettuce and then pile the relishes up on different areas of the tray. Men seem to like relish trays, they pick and pick at them while the meal is being prepared....at least, that's how it is in my family.

I can't believe you are old enough to swear but don't have a clue what a relish tray is. Make it up. See what happens. You seem more annoyed than anything else, why even bother going?

A relish tray consists of olives (black and green) pickles, celery, (you can stuff the celery with cream cheese) you can put scallions (green onions) cherry tomatoes. You just put them on a platter. Or plate if you dont have a platter. arrange them next to each other and something in the middle. NO need for dips, not included in a relish tray.

put raw veggies, carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, pickles ,olives, cherry tomatoes, green, red ,and yellow peppers cucumbers, cut in pieces that are easy to pic up and dip into the dips. use ranch dressing cheese whiz and Italian dressing and spinach dip in their own cute glass bowls on your relish tray and deli sliced ham and turkey and maybe even roast beef, and slices of cheddar and swiss cheese.wrap foil on a large peice of cardboard and put christmas decorations on it and use colored saran wrap to cover it with, make it look too pretty to eat that will knock their socks off!

I don't think a relish tray has raw veggies on it. I think it is small dill and sweet pickles, green and black olives, pickled peppers like pepperonchini, jalapeno, things like pickled okra, pickled beets, pickled cauliflower mix, etc. Just go shop the pickle aisle.

I cut summer sausage, cheese(usually two different kinds), olives, celery, carrots, and deviled eggs. Crackers can also be included.
I have a special tray, but before I just dressed up an extra serving platter. A centerpiece of dip looks nice if you have the room.

it can be anything you want on it from pickles, olives, vegetables. it is your tray and can be used with anything you want to have on it.

usually pickles, olives and cut up veggies.

pickle chesese fruit

typically it's only the pickles, olives and such..soooo...bread and butter dills, baby dills, sweet pickles, different types stuffed olives, maybe even add some pickled things like mushrooms or asparagus...if they wanted veggies too they should have said veggie tray...that stuff should not be on a 'relish tray'...

Get a nice big tray with an edge to it so things don't slide off.
Pile on:
Black ripe olives
Green olives stuffed with pimento or garlic
Artichoke hearts
Pickled peppers - red & green
Celery sticks
Carrot sticks
Pickled onions
Cherry or grape tomatoes
small bowl of cranberry sauce
small bowl of horseradish cream
bread and butter pickles
any small finger food pickle like baby dill or gherkin
