Answers:
it depends!.!.!.!.
"asked to bring something"
meaning food or drink or whatever!?!?!?
how about something simple, heres some ideas!.!.!.!.!.have him

order a cookie arrangement from a bakery
order a pie, you said you are making a pie, but seasonal pies are a huge hit (pumpkin, apple, sweet potato pie) people like variety, maybe a sliver of each!.
a bottle of wine
all the mixers for margaritas
a fruit basket
green bean casserole
cheese and cracker tray (it can be ordered from the grocery)
relish tray (olives, roasted peppers, cheese, pickles etc)
a simple appetizer
smoked fish dip (from costco, just transfer it into a seperate bowl
a cheese ball with crackers
chips with salsa and guacamole
frozen mini cream puffs (they take 15 minutes to defrost on the counter
mini stuffed appetizer pies
all grocery stores have ready made appetizers in or around the deli case and at the big box warehouse stores such as sams clubWww@FoodAQ@Com

Since the meal seems to be well in hand, your friend should probably lean toward bringing a host/hostess gift instead of something for the table (unless they've specifically asked for a dish to pass)!.

Candies, nuts, small floral arrangement, nice holiday-scented candle or sachets would all be nice!.
