Fondue and "Chex Party Mix" (Chex cereal with pretzels, nuts, etc.) were often seen at parties in the 70's. Also, mixed drinks like "7&7" (7Up & Seagrams7), "Long Island Iced Tea", "Tequila Sunrise", and "Rum and Coke" were popular. Lava lamps and disco balls were all the rage. Large hoop earrings and polyester leisure suits were in style. "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack was big as well as Led Zepplin (especially "Stairway To Heaven"). You have to do "The Hustle" (it's both a song as well as a dance) -- Trust me, this will make you laugh it is so idiotic -- but anyone that was around in the 70's will know this one. orange and green were very popular in the 70s. also try big flowers and shag carpet. a disco ball would be cute too. use the movie Saturday night fever as inspiration
The disco ball was a bit hit at every party. It's still a must. You may want to encourage attendees to wear their platform shoes, Dishikis, Peace emblems, Afros, braided extentions, hip huggers (low waiste pants), chokers (around the neck), small frabric head bands around the forehead (usually made of suede), bangles and large bracelets, hot pants and mini skirts. Also there was a time for midi skirts and maxi skirts, but mostly I recall a lot of pants with patches. The biggest must is the 70's disco music. If you have nothing else at all, YOU MUST HAVE THE 70's DISCO HITS. And lets not forget the incense and incense holders but leave the "pot" back in the 70's where it belong.
the colors are bold (sorta like austin power's movies) & the brady bunch.
i have a suggestion, find some pix of when they were dating/newlyweds and have them enlarged (16x20). place them in the dance hall or wherever you're having the party. or you could also make a slideshow with the pix.
