Fruit salad substitute?!

Question: Fruit salad substitute!?
over the summer, my oldest sister was having a bday party for her daughter, i told her i would make a nice fruit salad!.!.!. it wasn't any big deal, but my whole family loves fruit and it usually makes a great appetizer and dessert alike for all of us!.!. because there are so many different fruits in season i was able to make a really new, fun, and delish mixture that everyone thought was awesome!.!.!. well, this thanksgiving, my middle sister, who is hosting, asked that i make the fruit salad again!.!.!. but i have a few issues with this - 1) its fall, and there aren't so many fruits that are in season to make a salad out of; 2) fruit is really expensive right now, and i am unemployed; and 3) its thanksgiving - i want to make something more intricate, because so many people are going to be there as well as my in laws, for the first time, and i have a chance to make something really good (my mother in law always cooks!.) so, instead of making a fruit salad, i am trying to come up with a similar substitution, really delicious that will make everyone say WOW! any ideas!? i really don't want to make this fruit salad!.!.!. the side of the family that will be there (my brother in laws family for the most part) will care more about the alcohol and mashed potatoes than fru- fru fruit salad!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You can make a fruit salad with fruits that are more in season now, especially apples and pears!. Add a few ingredients, whatever you can find: cranberries, dates, walnuts, kiwi, fresh oranges, canned mandarin oranges, canned pineapple chunks, bananas, pomegranate seeds, honey, dried fruits!. You can either leave it by itself (with some lemon or lime juice to prevent browning), serve with a homemade or store-bought fruit dip, or toss in some yogurt!.

An good fall alternative for a fruit dish is to bake some apples or bananas with brown sugar and top with whipped cream!. It's easy but delicious!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Maybe you can go cheap on the fruit, with cut apples and bananas, and then make a really yummy fruit dip!. I've never made one, I wish I could give you a recipe!. But I've had them before where its like cream cheese and sugar and cool whip, and its so delicious! You could also bring frozen fruit if you want a better variety!. You could also consider a chocolate fondue!. Just buy the melting chocolate (hopefully you have or can barrow a fondue pot), then everyone will have fun dipping the fruit in the decadent chocolate! Make a regular ambrosia salad with Canned fruit, Whipped Cream, and coconut shreds!. Don't forget to mix a container of sour cream in it!. Everyone will love it!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I had this problem a month ago at a family gathering!.!.
what I did was at least buy what fruit they did have in the stores!.!. and add to it a few cans of fruit cocktail (yeah, I know, yuck)!.!. but at least i put in the fresh I could find!.!.
I cut this up and put it all in a huge bowl!.!. (drain the canned fruit first) squeezed juice from 1/2 lemon over (in case bananas or apples would turn brown!.
then I added 1/4 cup 7-up!.!. and 1/4 cup mixed fruit juice (any brand, but I tried to get the real no sugar juice type)!.!.
poured this over the fruit!.!. then drizzled a couple of tablespoons of real good honey over this and stirred well!.!. put in fridge till serving time!.!.
then to serve!.!. I got individual small serving bowls, or pretty wine glasses!. or anything really , mugs, etc!.!. whatever you can use!.!. but not large!.!.
and placed 1 large scoop vanilla ice cream in the bottom of bowl, added a couple of large spoons of fruit on top of the icecream, then dolloped whipped cream on top of the fruit!.!. drizzled more honey over the top!.!. and (if you saved the red cherries from the canned fruit salad) plop them on top for decoration!.!. or if not!.!. you can elect to either not decorate, or sprinkle chopped nuts over!. anything you feel you like!.!.
my family loved this!.!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
