We have finger food and drinks for an afternoon shower. We have put together the least corniest games we have found with prizes for the winners. We will decorate and shower our friend with gifts- how necessary is a cake?

Completely up to you, but since you are questioning it, I think you will feel awkward when the time comes wondering whether you should have had the cake or not. I would definitely do it!
We did a shower where we had fingerfoods and then special chocolates around gorgeous slices of Angel food cake topped with fresh sugared stawberries. It was a hit! Not too heavy, but light and refreshing and YUMMY!
You could even make mini cheesecakes topped with canned cherries, blueberries, chocolate, etc with a mint leave to garnish and then set them up in an elegant display of cake stands..

Yes, it is a celebration and a cake would be terrific.
It would serve two purposes: a decoration, and a desert.
The cake is the centerpiece. All finger foods and drinks surround it. It is served after the finger foods are eaten... and after or during the opening of the gifts. So sorry the guests have to endure corny games.

You don't have to, but it is customary. Bakeries do nice cakes with all these cute little baby decorations on them. It can always be sent home as a "favor" if you don't want to serve it there.

The cake is typically seen as an important piece to a shower. I would recommend having a cake. But if you aren't sure, ask the person you are throwing the shower for. If they want a cake. Get a cake. If they say they don't care, it's up to you. If they say no, don't get one.
I know, if someone threw a shower for me, I would be disappointed if there wasn't a cake. But it's not necessarily a HAVE TO HAVE.
I had a cake at my baby shower. My mom actually took a picture of my BIG pregnant belly and put it on my cake and I didn't know about it until everyone else seen it first. If you are gonna have alot of people there I would have one unless you are having alot of other stuff there. I had a chocolate fondue fountain and fruit at mine. But it is really up to u it isn't necessary

I don't think there is any ettiquette rule requiring a cake, however it is customary. It doesn't have to be a fancy store-bought cake. It could even be a pie, or a tray of cookies. Some sort of dessert should be served.

no, its just a somewhat tradition. Many people have had cakes at their baby showers, and played games. You just have to have something sweet to eat.

Very necessary! People like a good cake at the end of a shower meal! Keeps them awake during the opening of the presents!! I would be sad without cake.

Cake is not necessary, but is considered customary. It's still perfectly acceptable to have a sweet tray, cookies, cupcakes, or even a donut tower from Krispy Kreme. Since you're serving finger foods, going with something small may be a good option. Maybe some petit fours?
I have only seen cupcakes with cute baby decorations....I am sure a cake would be fine too, but the cupcakes are really cute.
what about a chocolate fountain? something sweet, but fun. I have seen some very inexpensive models at some major stores, or you can rent them as well. Then, you just melt some chocolate and supply some dippers, strawberries, pretzels, etc., dessert and entertainment in one!
I recently attended a shower that was a brunch and instead of a cake, they served cinnamon rolls just like the ones they have at Cinnabon. Very good!
