I like the keg idea also OR cases of beer cans (1/4 sheet cakes stacked up and decorated), but my 'serving tray' would be a dolly -- cut out of heavy cardboard / wood and cover with foil.

Ways to make a groom's cake masculine and personalize it:
1. Make it rectangular rather than round.
2. Use cream colored or beige frosting with an elegant brown ribbon.
3. Use the groom's favorite colors or the colors of his favorite sports team if appropriate.
4. The cake flavor can contrast with the wedding cake.
i.e. if the wedding cake is vanilla, the groom's cake can be chocolate or the wedding cake might not have any liquor while the groom's cake has a touch of rum or it can be tiramisu
