Chocolates, or a piece of real good quality grand padano parmesan cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

How about a pot plant!? If he likes cooking Italian, a big pot of basil, oregano and parsley he can put on the kitchen window sill would be lovely!.
Or a small decorative chilli plant!.
If you were talking about something consumable rather than a house warming type gift, then make a dessert, or garlic bread!. Or a plate of olives, grissini and procuitto for anti pastoWww@FoodAQ@Com

Make him some Biscotti yourself!.!.!.

Will take you 5 mins at the most to make and then 30ish minutes to bake!.!.!. just set a timer and get on with something else!.

For homemade Biscotti!. Makes around 15 -20 depending on how thick you cut them!.

1 egg
100g caster sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
few drops of almond essence
125g plain flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
50g shelled almonds (unsalted)
75g dark chocolate chips (or chocolate cut up into chunks the size of chips)

Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees!.

Whisk up egg and sugar until thick and frothy!.
Add essences!.
Flop in the flour, salt, baking powder, almonds and choc chips!.
Fold together, flop onto lined baking tin!. Make a flat log shape with a tapered end!.

Bake for 25 mins!. Take out, allow to cool for 5!. Slice on the diagonal about 1cm thick!. Stand each slice back on tray and return to oven for 10-12 minutes!.

Allow to cool and keep in an airtight container until you've dunked them all!!

As they are a gift mabe wrap them nicely!. I roasting bag is a good choice when decorated with Xmas curling ribbon!. Or in a nicely decorated box

Without the time the suggetsion of the BIG pepper grinder is a good one or a flash parmesan grater!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A bag of really good coffee beans and a grinder

A big piece of panforte (" a traditional Italian dessert containing fruits and nuts, and resembling fruitcake or Lebkuchen" according to wiki)!. I say piece cause its sold in slabs rather than cakes!.

I second the plant idea, and add that if you think he might struggle to keep one alive, a cactus is fairly idiot proof!.
