Hookah not producing any smoke? ?!

Question: Hookah not producing any smoke!? !?
My friend has a Hookah from Lebanon that he got when he went there!. We tried it last night and it doesn't seem to be producing any smoke when you inhale!. The tobacco was shredded and sprinkled lightly on top, we placed foil over it and poked holes, and lit the coal until red hot and placed it on top!.

Now, we had one small problem!. We didn't have the hose that came with it when he bought it!. Is that a problem!? Could that be the reason that no smoke is being inhaled!? (Oh, and freshly added water is in the glass bottom, of course)

Thank you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Smoke issues like amount and thinkness boil down to two issues, Heat Management and Bowl Packing!.

With packing you want to drop it in loosely!. till it's a1/4 inch above the bowl!. Use a toothpick to make sure the air flow makes it to the holes in the bottom of the boil and push the tobacco down with the foil!.

Using a phunnel bowl makes this easier!. And way beyond the level of traditional bowls

Heat Management Use the right amount of heat for you bowl and tobacco!. You can add more heat to get more smoke but you may loose a bit of flavor!. It will take a bit of trial and error to find your happy medium!. Better coals is always a step in a better session!. Try Coconaras they are the top of the line charcoal!.
