The best food for the surprise party would be a menu having some of the favorite dishes of yoyr dad. You need not worry even if the menu seems an odd match, as the oddness would go better in a surprise party.After all you are going through so much trouble to make this day special so go all the way and indulge him.

This is my favorite dessert for parties.

White Russian Tiramisu

* 1/2 cup ground coffee
* 1-3/4 cups cold water
* 1/4 cup Kahlua (coffee-flavored liqueur), divided
* 1/2 cup (3-1/2 ounces) mascarpone cheese
* 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
* 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
* 1/4 cup sugar
* 24 ladyfingers (2- 3ounce packages)
* 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder, divided

Place ground coffee in coffee filter. Add cold water to coffee maker, and brew to make 1-1/2 cups. Combine brewed coffee and 2 tablespoons liqueur in a shallow dish; allow to cool.
Combine cheeses in a large bowl. Beat at high speed of a mixer until smooth. Add sugars and remaining liqueur, and beat until well-blended.
Split ladyfingers in half lengthwise. Quickly dip 24 ladyfinger halves, flat sides down, into coffee mixture; place, dipped sides down, in the bottom of an 8-inch-square baking dish, slightly overlapping ladyfinger halves. Spread half the cheese mixture over ladyfingers; sprinkle with 1 teaspoon cocoa. Repeat procedure with remaining ladyfinger halves, coffee mixture, cheese mixture and cocoa.
Place 1 toothpick in each corner and 1 in the center of tiramisu (to prevent plastic wrap from sticking to cheese mixture cover with plastic wrap. Chill 2 hours. Be sure to remove toothpicks before serving.

Give us a little more information - time of day, number of people,. looking for appetizers, buffet, sit-down or dessert type party? Anything special that your Dad likes? Otherwise the best recipe I can give is this;

Add good friends, good food, balloons, and love. Mix well together and you will have a successful party! Happy Birthday to your Dad!!!

The best recipe would be your dad's FAVORITE !!!!!

You can "trick" him by giving his "pathetic" gift early that day. Have him do some errands while you and the rest of the group fix up the place and prepare the food. Have guests come on time before he gets there. Food suggestions: barbeque, potato salad, roasted chicken, rolls, margarita/tequila bar, cake w/ his picture on it and ice cream. Have banners w/ 40's. If you have the resources of putting up a slide show or a collage, it would be good. Don't forget the moving camera!

Make homemade tortillas. Other than that and a whole lot of other recipes tell your dad Happy Birthday for me. There is one other thing, say, "Surprise dad we still love you as always"
