Can you help me plan my 26th birthday?
I'm having a party for my 26th birthday at my apartment in Hartford. I'm an artist....with a relatively modern eye. The group is an eclectic mix including friends, sisters, nephew, work people and parents. I'm expecting to have something like 30 people. I need a theme...any ideas? I'm also looking to have dinner...not a sit down but I want all of the food to work together. I'm relatively healthy...love veggies, goat cheese, elaborate salads, hummus, sweet potatoes and different stuff. Again, I like thints just so...modern looking, clean and crisp. I'm totally into cooking it all. Any recipes to go with the theme? Also...what am I to do with this weird mix of people....any suggestions for activities? Also, I don't drink and most of my friends also don't drink....so no need to go crazy on the cocktail suggestions....however punches etc I'm interested in!! Thanks for your suggestions!

Drink - Make a Tea Bar with both hot & cold teas - serve w/ different flavored simple syrups (equal amounts of sugar & water over low heat until sugar is dissolved - infuse w/ zest, herbs, ginger, whatever you & your friends like)
Food - As there are so many people I would make 3 areas or so w/ different foods that are easy to eat on the go.
1. Skewered meats & veggies
2. Make Crab, Chicken or Shrimp Salad & serve in endive leaves
3. Mashed Potato Bar - Serve potatoes in martini glasses w/ assorted toppings
4. Deconstructed Salad - Use a large platter & line up all of your salad ingredients instead of mixing them - makes a nice presentation & people can choose exactly what they want.
5. Fruit Display - If you want to take some extra time go to a craft store & get a foam floral block - cover in foil & attach pieces of fruit using toothpicks - also looks great w/ cherry tomatoes & mozarella balls drizzled w/ basil infused olive oil.
A great way to serve your food is on pieces of slate - go to a tile store & look through they're discount/damaged selection. If they tiles are broken it just gives them more character. Place on top of glasses of different sizes to give your table height in different areas.

Don't laugh get a karaoke machine. but names in a hat and whoever name is drawn has to recite a poem sing dance or tell a joke! however bad or good! great ice breaker! The main reason for party is the celebrate and have fun.
A Hawaii theme with leis music and flowers
play musical tables. sit people at tables for 30 minutes then they get up and set at another table and talk and mingle. kinda like speed dating or bonding it is fun we done it.
Play bingo and have gag prizes!lol play twister.
People will talk about your fun party for ages.
