Need ideas for hubby's 40th birthday party.?
Party will probably be a surprise party after church on a Sunday, don't want people to bring gifts or anything, need ideas for casual food & fun for about 50 people of varied ages. (Especially for the "fun" part.)

You could check out what was popular 40 yars ago and go along those lines.
Homemade ice cream and cupcakes. Get friends to bring ice cream freezers and operate them. Cup cakes are easy and you can have several varieties. If you plan on feeding everyone I would suggest something like chili or stew + accompaniments (Bread sticks, rolls, croutons or whatever.) Since the party is after church people will probably be hungry. Another option is to go to a Shoney's or other establishment that has a party room and let them hassle with all the clean-up.
What about a Pirate party ?
Bread rolls , A haunch of beef or a ham , salads ,mustards
non alcoholic punch based on ginger ale
blindfold games ,tug of war with a rope for kids,
pin the parrot on the pirate etc
People can just wear a kerchief or striped t shirt , jeans, eye patch, captain hook plastic hook, costume shops have black blutac to give the effect of a missing tooth !!
Pirate wenches can wear a mob cap and full skirts, frills , corset tops etc
The whole thing has a dressup feel and can get gently wild even without alcohol !!!
Is he depressed about turning 40? Hold a wake and have funeral food
I agree with mlrios 200. I had a friend whose husband was turning 40, and they held an "over-the-hill" surprise party where the wife dressed up like a widow!
