any ideas on what kind of party to have, and what kind of food do I make and what is a perfect gift to buy her from mom and dad?

Sleepovers are always fun. Maybe a make-over party?? Ask your daughter and see what she wants to do. Try to be open-minded.
I would have loved to get a car for my 16th, however most people can't afford a brand new car. A lot of my friends have gotten savings bonds from family members over the years and although it seemed boring at the time that they got them, everyone is thankful they have them now. If you want to get her a larger gift that doesn't quite fit the budget get the family together and pool your money. One year for my birthday I wanted a big huge bowl chair and my whole family pitched in and got me one.
Over-all? Ask your daughter. Maybe take her out to lunch and have a whole birthday discussion/ party planning day. It will give you time to spend time with her and it will make sure that she will enjoy her birthday.

There are tons of ideas and it all depends on how much you can spend. gifts depends on how much you can spend as well
the best advice to give you is to have the party at a pizza/games place (here we have "incredible pizza") or a mall food court party would be perfect-- bring your cake and buy the girls whatever they want... give her a gift card to spend at the mall and suggest the same gifts from her friends- though they are welcome to get whatever they want... just make yourself scarce! no 16 yr old wants her family around on her birthday-- have a family party the night before so you can give her her gift card.

Original recipe yield:
4 6 ounce ramekins

COOK TIME 35 Min

INGREDIENTS2 cups heavy cream 1/4 cup white sugar 1 pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 egg yolks 4 tablespoons white sugar DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) and line the bottom of a large baking pan with a damp kitchen cloth.
Bring a large pot of water to boil. While water is boiling, combine cream, 1/4 cup sugar and salt in saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally 4 to 5 minutes, until steam rises. In a medium bowl, beat egg yolks and vanilla until smooth. Pour hot cream into yolks, a little at a time, stirring constantly, until all cream is incorporated. Pour mixture into four 6 oz. ramekins.
Place ramekins on towel in baking dish, and place dish on oven rack. Pour boiling water into dish to halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover whole pan loosely with foil.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until custard is just set. Chill ramekins in refrigerator 4 to 6 hours.
Before serving, sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar over each custard. Use a kitchen torch or oven broiler to brown top, 2 to 3 minutes.
Monday Special: Chocolate Layered Cake

INGREDIENTS
1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix 1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix 2 cups sour cream 1 cup melted butter 5 eggs 1 teaspoon almond extract 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 10 inch Bundt pan.
In a large bowl, stir together cake mix and pudding mix. Make a well in the center and pour in sour cream, melted butter, eggs and almond extract. Beat on low speed until blended. Scrape bowl, and beat 4 minutes on medium speed. Blend in chocolate chips. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Honestly? I'd talk to your daughter. Chances are, she's been thinking about it herself.
Consider taking her shopping for a nice dress to wear to a nice, grownup restaurant for a family-only dinner. Alternately, if she's been dating someone she's 'serious' about, ask her if she'd like to invite him along too. And then plan out a night of fun for her and her friends. She's definitely going to want to have a party to celebrate the birthday, but she may not be interested in having an elaborate soiree to celebrate turning 16 with those outside the family.
Bowling, roller rinks, go-karts, malls, movies, slumber parties - all of these could work. See if there are any local makeup counters or avon reps that you can track down that would be willing to do 'makeovers' for a bunch of teenage girls.
If you do end up having a party of some sort, consider buying a bunch of disposable cameras for the girls to use, as well as a nice photo album dedicated to the 'sweet sixteen' party.

If you're able to reserve a hotel room, that is an awesome option.The girls can go run around and be crazy, go in the pool, etc. and you don't have to worry about a bunch of kids in the house. As far as food, if it isn't a surprise, ask for her imput; all sixteen year olds can think of what kind of food they're craving. I'm guessing the party people will want to stay up all night, so buying a case of energy drinks is a cool idea too. Gift cards seem to be the best idea for sixteen-year-olds; it gives them a chance to be independent and make thier own choices, something all teens want. Hope the party goes well!

Throw her a princess themed sweet 16 - girls love that stuff, even get her a tiara.
