Question: What are some good party planning tips for a 1 year celebration of a kidney transplant!?

I want to have a party or "get-together" for my mom in February to commemorate the one year anniversary of her receiving a kidney transplant after 4 years on the transplant waiting list!. I have planned to order her a kidney-shaped cake and a banner saying " Happy Transplanniversary!" [transplant + anniversary]!. I don't know if I should go for a certain theme like a first birthday party, or luau, or something else!. It will just be my immediate family attending!. So nothing too extravagant!.
