Restaurant Profile

The residential areas of North Park have their share of oddities. Like Victorian houses turned into apartment complexes or a soaring water tower plunked between two back yards.
The Pepto-Bismol-pink Mama's Bakery and Lebanese Deli may look a bit out of place sandwiched among houses on Alabama Street just south of El Cajon Boulevard. The restaurant is a converted old home, with the backyard now serving as a covered dining patio, with posters and pictures of Lebanon tacked to its makeshift fence. The cash register and kitchen are crammed into a converted garage, and the main house is a storage room for food and supplies. Unless you have cause to drive down Alabama Street, you might not even notice Mama's is there -- even the owner calls it a "hole in the wall."

So, what's the big deal? The food, of course; it's incredible. Known for its fresh, homemade flat bread, Mama's offers a delicious variety of authentic Lebanese sandwiches/wraps (the Manakeesh and Hummus are two of the best), pies (meat, cheese and spinach here) and desserts (phyllo bread seasoned and stuffed with ground cashews, pistachios and other nuts). This is the real deal, and for a quick snack or lunch on the run, top-quality, melt-in-your-mouth food doesn't come more reasonably priced than this. Sandwiches and pies are less than $5, with combo plates a buck and change more.
