Question:

I'm hosting a dinner party (4 couples.) any theme party suggestions?

Answers:
Some friends of mine and I once did a "faux formal" dinner. We used the theme of The Great Gatsby and everybody had to go to Salvation Army or Goodwill for their costumes. Was a hoot just trying to find the right costumes. You could do this with any theme actually, I guess.

swinging? lol

just make it look fancy

Hawaiian - you can outfit it really cute and your guests could wear Hawaiian shirts. There are novelty stores where you can buys leis and I saw a paper parrot that was way cute.

choose an ethnic theme like mexican or japanese and then make those kinds of foods and decorations for the table.

Great loves, for example:
Romeo and Juliet
Cleopatrta and Anthony
Lucy and Dezi
Erkle and Laura

Al-Quaida Night! Little hand grenades for table decorations, I.E.D.s under the chairs, miniature AK-47s in the drinks, etc...

80's prom. You could get dresses and suits at a thrift store. make some hunch punch (or whatever was the teen drink of your day) and play Duran Duran and madonna

I once went to a Gilligan's Island theme party. Every guest had to come as a character from the TV show. Of course, there were a couple of each of the characters, but it was fun trying to decide who was the best Ginger or Professor. Everyone loved it.

Keep it sexy!

Pimps & Hoes, PJ Party, etc

Greek themed?

I've always wanted to host a Rocky Horror Picture Show party!!

How about a good ole American theme in honor of our troops that can't attend dinner party's

roaring twenties with the big hollywood glamour. Black and white affair with red accessories.

I did a birthday dinner for ten with an Italian theme-- but I wanted it to stay subtle and fun (no costumes, etc).

I made homemade gourmet pizza (recipe from the Barefoot Contessa Parties), gnocchi with lemon aioli dipping sauce (Secrets from a Caterers Kitchen), and the strawberry country cake (from Barefoot Contessa). I was new to cooking so I'm sure you can find more sophisticated Tuscan-themed foods on epicurious.com or elsewhere. But I will say that everything I made was easy to prep before-hand so I was able to enjoy the party.

Beverages: I served San Pellegrino orange and lemon sodas (easy to find at Trader Joe's), Italian sparkling water, Italian wines, and Campari.

For Dessert: An easy and very Italian dessert is biscotti (again, great recipes on epicurious.com) with Vin Santo (an Italian dessert wine)

Decor: Lots of fresh flowers and candles. I kept the theme pretty low key, but I put pretty cards at each person's place with something absurd in Italian. I put a few of these around the apartment as well.

Music: I had so much fun with this. I put together a mix of opera (heavy on the Puccini), Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andrea Bocelli, the theme from the Sopranos, and Rosemary Clooney's "Mambo Italiano."

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Surf and Turf. You can grill some steaks, sit outside, and get a catered seafood platter from a fish store such as a clam bake, lobster tails, crab legs, or something else.

These favors are really fun. Everyone talks about them:

I did a host your own murder mystery party once (a board game you buy) Its fun. Lots of themes
