What is "hummus" and "pate"?!


Question:

What is "hummus" and "pate"?

I know they are spreads of some kind. If there is NO extra flavor added to them, what are they made out of? Is one less expensive than the other? Plus, other ideas for spreads for finger sandwiches w/o spending too much money (in case there are new people on here as that is what I'm going for). I thought I had heard that hummus was something that I did not want to try once. I can't remember. Help!! Thanks.

There are lots of "spreads" to use on bread or sandwiches. One that's popular in the UK is Branston Pickle.

Hummus:
A smooth thick mixture of mashed chickpeas, tahini, oil, lemon juice, and garlic, used especially as a dip for pita.

Pate:
A paté (also spelled paté) is a spreadable paste, usually made from meat although vegetarian variants exist, and often served with toast as a starter. It is a French word which designates a mixture of minced meat (often from the less desirable parts) and fat, it should not be confused with "paté en cro?te" which now means paté within a crust or bun, but used to serve as a term for "meat pastry or pie."

It is generally made from a finely ground or chunky mixture of meats such as liver, and often additional fat, vegetables, herbs, spices, wine and other ingredients.

Hummus is one of my favorite foods in all the world. There are many different flavorings that can be added to it, though garlic is the most common. It's just made from garbanzo beans and tahini (crushed sesame paste) and a little lemon juice. It's very cheap to make yourself and just play with it. BTW, add a little cilantro and garlic and you can serve it on most anything at a party for a wonderful treat.


Pate may be expensive. But if you're looking for a great alternative, check out Olive Tapenade.

Hummus is blended chickpeas with garlic and sometimes herbs. It's awesome, though if you're not used to interesting food it can take getting used to. People put it on sandwiches or dip pita bread in it.

Pate is whipped liver. Gross.

Chickpeas puree with Tahina(paste of sesame seeds) garlic and OLIVE OIL.

Hommus is mainly used as appetizer or in salad platter. Olive oil is must for this paste. (Lebanese Hummus is very famous)

Pate is paste of liver but for a change try this spread

1 lb. smoked fish, salmon or trout
1/4 c. butter
1 med. onion, finely chopped
1 hard boiled egg, finely chopped
Light oil and corn or safflower
Celery seed to taste
Garlic powder to taste

Skin an bone fish. Flake finely with fork. Set aside. In medium skillet, melt butter. Add onion. Cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add onion mixture to fish. Add chopped egg. Mix well. Add enough light oil to bring pate to desired consistency. Season with celery seed and garlic powder.
