Making B-Day Dinner for Mom need advice!?!?!

Question: Making B-Day Dinner for Mom need advice!?!?
OK so I'm having my Mom and her husband, my sister, her husband and 2yr old, and my mom's friend over for dinner, all together including me and my boyfriend there will be 8 of us. I'm kind of freaking myself out b/c #1 I don't have a whole lot of space in my dining room (it only sits 4 people) and #2 I've never had anything at my house before for anyone usually my sister does it so I feel like I have to do everything perfect!

I've decided I'm going to have Salad, Fried Chicken, and speghetti, the reason is b/c my mom requested fried chicken, but my sister won't eat it... my mom also enjoys speghetti but my sister makes that for her every year so I kind of wanted to do my own thing, that's why i incorporated both. I'm wondering does anyone think I should add something else to the meal? I will also have dessert that my mom's friend will bring.. (not sure what it is probably cake of some kind)

I was thinking everyone can just be casual and eat in the living room or wherever they can fit, but this is something a little different from the way my sister always does things, (she's very formal).. So I kind of feel like I'm over thinking EVERYTHING!! any advice on how I can make this a success?? and what do u think of the meal idea??

Thanks in advance..

Maybe add some garlic bread, croissants, or breadsticks?

You're family won't care if your limited on space...if you want to have more gatherings at your house though, you should keep an eye out for fold out tables and chairs on sale.

Maybe do a raw veggie platter with a dip for everyone to pick on. This will add a few mor veggies for those who want them. It can be ordered from local market, or made up in advance so not alot of extra work for you.

Set up food, dishes, cutlery, etc. buffet style and then the dining room seating will not be a problem.
Just make sure there is enough seating for all. Folding chairs by end tables offer a place for a table surface for the diner to use.

Set up after dinner drinks and desserts in a different area that the main meal. Appetizers can be as simple as a bowl of nuts, olives or bagel chips with a good dip and this can be placed on a coffee talbe.

Drinks-before dinner and dinner- should have their own area also-this includes glasses. Good luck and don't worry about anything.

STOP STRESSING ABOUT MEASURING UP TO YOUR SISTER!!! your mom loves you for you and isn't going to love you less because you don't do things the way your sister does. so if they end up sittin on the couch, who cares? it just means it'll be easier for everyone to chit chat! as for the meal itself, if you're trying to do your own thing, why are you incorporating what your sister makes every year into it? just something to think about....other than that tho, it's a good setup. relax, everything will work out, and hope your mom's birthday is bangin!

I would absolutely make some garlic bread or some Texas Toast. Those who want it can eat it; the others can avoid carbs by going easy on the bread. It kind of completes the meal. I would make it a buffet where people can help themselves. (That's what I have done when I have a table that won't fit everyone. Some can sit at the table and others can use TV trays and sit in the living room. It doesn't matter how your sister does it at her house. That is her style. People love the casual way of eating anyway. It will be great. Your menu is fine; someone is bringing dessert and you can sit and enjoy your Mom's birthday knowing that everyone is together. Have a great time.
