What is a progressive dinner?!
Answers:
The idea was to involve 4-6 couples in a neighborhood.
People would meet at the first house for aperitif & appetizer.
Then move on to another for soup or salad courses.
Then another for the main dish or entree.
Winding up at the last house for dessert & liqueurs.
Such elaborate meals & cooking them, are no longer in style;
so people today, resist going to such trouble.
An earlier popular custom, which is popular at churches,
is having a Pot Luck Supper, where everyone brings a dish.
That way, people can bring whatever they can afford;
& enjoy a shared meal in community.
Even more fun, an organization I was in as a teen, our moms would hold backward progressive dinners - we went to someone's house for dessert first and by the time we worked our way backwards to appetizers we were at the house where we'd have our slumber party - the last house was always a surprise to us as to where we'd be.
its when friends in a neighborhood all get together to have a dinner. you migrate from house to house and have one "course" at each house. Like, my house would be appetizers, your hosue could be entree, someone elses house is dessert and cocktails.
A meal that has courses served in different places, usually someone elses house. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive…
You pick 4 couples or people. You go to the first home for the appetizer, next for salad, then entree then dessert, very very fun!
