We are driving to Las Vegas to celebrate a 50th birthday in May, I was going to bring my dog but my wife told me that he can't hold a golf club so he's not welcome. I don't think that this is really fair because I know he could drive the cart. It probably has more to do with his penchant for the sports book that has her worrying. Hope you have a great birthday!
Depending on where you live, April might be a good month to have an outdoor party instead. Your options would open up to the beach or a park. Additionally, you could hold it somewhere like a zoo with an area available for dining or rent a tent and set up somewhere on a golf course.
Go to a restaurant with a large indoor area and ask them how much they would charge to reserve the space for however many guests. If your willing to do the work, you could line up more than one place and haggle with them to see who will offer you the better deal. Let them know the guest count at its maximum so they are more inclined to meet your wishes.
ask one of your local pubs to do a buffet for you. then all you got to pay for is the buffet.
You could also make it fancy dress and hire a Karaoke
Go for Golden Celebration.
bbq
Congrats on your 50th & happy early bday!
If the hall works out you could have your typical dancing/food/alcohol party but find ways to lower the cost as I'm guessing the hall itself will have a rental fee. Think about friends or family members who could act as a DJ. You could rent a stereo system and/or karaoke machine or ask around, surely someone has one or both that you could use. Maybe you have a younger son, nephew, child of a friend who is really into music and would do good at this. It would be cool if the hall has a mic system set up, if not you could rent one but you could do without it too.
Along the same lines, think of someone who could serve as a bartender. Sure you can always have beer in big tubs (galvanized washtubs are cool for this) but it adds some fun to have a bar set up with someone serving drinks. You could do this as extravagant or simple as you wanted...wine, mixed drinks, margaritas/daiquiris, etc, shots, etc...
Lighting is important too. Christmas lights are easy and you can borrow a bunch to string around. Candles on tables is nice too (make sure someone keeps an eye on them). Balloons are always an essential and are cheap. You can usually get them inflated at the grocery store or dollar store for 3 or 4 for a dollar.
As for food you can keep it simple if you think there's gonna be a lot of drinking. Any finger foods will work. And of course you need your cake! Cupcakes are cool too.
You could go with a theme like retro 60s/70s, luau, etc or not. Some ppl may or may not like to have to dress up, that's up to you.
If the hall closes you could ask around, maybe one of your friends lives in a community or apts where they have a large clubhouse or check with some other civic organizations to see if they rent out their rooms. Maybe someone is a member of a country club.
If all else fails you can always go to a bar, karaoke bars are fun. Maybe somebody knows someone at a local bar that could help you out with having a reserved area of the bar, etc.
Hope this is what you were looking for.
