Answers:
I've hosted a lot of great dinner parties.... A recent favorite went off very well because....

*Funny invitations that set the mood. We put a copy of one in the centerpiece of the table and also a matching place card at each setting.
*We kept the menu very simple italian family style so we were able to relax as hosts (easy assembly bruschetta appetizers, gnocci with gorgonzola sauce, Fresh hot bread with roasted garlic and balsamic for dipping and a big beautiful summer salad
*8 friends of varied backgrounds made for great conversation, but our guests of honor visiting from Cali were especially interesting.
*Lots of good wine!
*no kids!

we have 4 couples that get together once a month for a dinner party we chose a country then everyone brings a dish from that country..we dress in that countries theme and discuss whatever comes to mind about that country.. your public library has lots of dvd's on countries its a good opening to get people in the theme of things

When I was in high school, my friend's parents went out of town one weekend.

We immediately thought, "Parrrrtayyyy!"

And being well behaved honor students, what did we do? Did we score a keg and hand out flyers to the entire school, inviting them to a rager at my friend's home?

No.

We had a dinner party, a pseudo-high-brow pot-luck. A dozen of us brought olives and french bread and nutella and those fancy whole-wheat crackers.

To drink, we had sparkling grape juice.

And because we had to take advantage of the mice being away, we really broke the rules and used their BEST CHINA.

I've been to some fun dinner parties since then, but none so adventurous as that illicit party in high school.

the food and the guests, 'spaedino di mare' for the meal and people I love for company, with these two the event or occasion tends to be of minor importance
