Poor manners, no idea of the prices, talk to other staff at work rather than doing the job. if that fits move directly into bar managers work.
A customer.
My friend is a bartender on a large yacht in Monte Carlo. He's been doing it since he was 21 and he's British. There are bartenders out there that work in bars and know a few things and get paid minimum wage and tips. However if you want to 'be a professional bartender' and work at the top places you need a few minimum qualifications to get your foot in the door. A week's wine service and appreciation course, a basic food hygiene course, handling fine spirits course and something on making cocktails like margaritas and high balls. Sometimes qualifications are nothing more than certificates issued by a specialist training entity--a day course in handling fine spirits (whisky, cognac, etc) for example--it's worth having it on your CV.
You need to invest in yourself to make a difference in the market and get your foot in the door.
I have bartending courses on my CV and I'm a chef. It gave me the edge!!!
If you obtain qualifications and build a proper career you can work all over the world. To be a bartender you need to be of legal drinking age in your country.
Good luck!
Watching my friend's career take off after seeing him work in a few pubs and build on his knowledge with job experience and taking 1 day and up to 5 day courses.
I think you have to be 21 to mix alcohol. A great personality, nice smile, great sense of humor. You have to learn all the drinks and bartenders make quite a bit of money depends on people skills and ability to mix and serve drinks in a timely fashion.
