What is the meaning behind removing someones name from their Birthday Cake?!

Question:

What is the meaning behind removing someones name from their Birthday Cake?

Recently I attended a birthday party, and the mother of the boy, removed his name from the birthday cake prior to cutting the cake. When asked why, all she said was "the ladies at the office do it"....when pressed for a real answer, she seemed upset.
So, other than the obvious "follower" comment, has anyone any clue as to the meaning of this ??? Where did it come from? Whats the meaning and or purpose?

Answers:
This is done in China, right before cutting the cake. They believe harm will cone to the person if their name is demolished by cutting

i dont get it

Sounds really weird - almost like voodoo. Like she's afraid to cut the cake while the kid's name is still on it, because that would really be cutting him...

Having said that, if the boy's mom does something just because everyone else in the office does it, she needs to get her head checked.

Cutting or eating the name could lead to bad luck.

You don't cut somebody. Remember what you do when you break up with your boyfriend? You tear up his picture....So you would not do that to anybody. That's why.

It may not be any..'religious' practice but just not done in some circles.

I have never heard of that being done. Why would someone do that without having any idea why? Weird.

Maybe so you're not cutting the name, or the "person" in half? Good luck, maybe? I've never heard of this practice.

she might be feel like cutting her son itself by cutting the cake with name

I have never heard of that before.

She must work w/ whackos. I've never heard of that. Now, my kids ask to have the peice that has their name on it... but I've never heard of removing the icing name.

I've never heard of this before! I think you're right with the "follower" comment . . .

I have no idea, but when it's my children's birthday's we cut their names out so they can eat that piece of the cake.

Never heard of it...til now. Always just blew out candles for good luck or had an extra candle for good luck...

Another tradition is to smear out the name of the person for good luck before slicing the cake for serving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/birthday_ca...

Im trying to understand the whole cutting a person thing.........a cake is a cake. A person is a person. If you want to cut a person you cut them! You dont vicsiously cut a cake...omg noooo dont cut my name on the cake...lol "In Circles" or not I think its a nutty thing to do. Wiping out the persons name on their own things...I never heard of a sane person do that! Nor have I ever seen anyone do that before or ever heard of it.

And I would have to agree.........if she's following "office procedure" on a cake she needs to realize she's made her own decisions before...and they were probably just fine! Has the boy ever been hurt by cutting the cake with his name on it before? And why would wiping out the name be better than cutting the name? Isn't that like erasing the entire person? Lets get real!

Very interesting. Learn something new every day.
