Is it weird to serve chili as a meal at a party?!

Question: Is it weird to serve chili as a meal at a party?
Im having a birthday party for my daughter (shes turning one). its a cowgirl/western theme so i though i could serve chili with cornbread and potato salad but my sisters say chili is a side and i should serve a "main" course...they say the chili wont be filling but i think it would be really cute. what do think? im also gonna corndogs mostly for the kids but adults can have them as well...and i dont want to do brisket or pork ribs..

Answers:

Chili is the main course at my house . I also serve cornbread with honey and butter to dip the corn bread in..Beans + corn =complete protein and that is a complete meal.I offer shredded cheese and sour cream to top the chili .From the deli= sliced turkey , sliced ham, and cheese slices with little rolls = mini sandwiches for anyone not wanting the chili.Don't forget daughter's birthday cake. Sounds like a great birthday meal to me. What time is the party??:)

Chili is only a side if you're used to the kind that comes on hotdogs. A bowl of chili is definitely a main course. Since it's a party, you may want to have some add-ins available for it. Things like grated cheese, sour cream, chopped chives, diced onion, and hot sauce would work well for this. Make it a chili bar. I think it's a great idea, especially if you're in a place that's having winter right now. If your sister thinkis it isn't filling, offer her a second bowl and/or a bigger spoon!

Yes. chili is fine. I'd just do a mini buffet of toppings to go with it. Maybe chopped onions, chopped chilis, grated cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, chips, etc. It would be more with your theme to roast new red potatoes & serve them instead of potato salad so guests can do a baked potato bar along with the chili & toppings. People love choices on a buffet.I'd also make a big tossed salad. Hope this helps!

Chili is NOT a side dish. Make it a chili bar. Have baked potatoes, cheese, sour cream, onions, fritos, a little hot sauce, corn brea, even a bread bowl if you choose.

You could also do some hot dogs and do chili dogs.

You don;pt buy nachos you make them. But for a party I would not do nachos.

Other good finger foods.. a fruit and veggie tray since the chili is kind of heavy.

Chips and dip and salsa.

That sounds like a great idea. I would make sure that your chili is pretty generic in flavor, not to spicy nothing unusual. But you can have lots of extras like hot sauce, onions, shredded cheese, sour cream so people can dress it however they want.
Great idea!

Ya it's fine! have you eaten chili? it's filling! add nachos for a even more western theme (actually it's mexican but somehow it still works)

The menu sounds perfect for a western theme. I've never heard someone say chili isn't a main dish. Of course it is.

I think it is a good idea, but perhaps you should have some other food in a Tex-Mex theme to be more filling.

Doubt she is even going to remember it.
