Help! What side dishes should I serve at my BBQ??!

Question:

Help! What side dishes should I serve at my BBQ??

We are grilling out hamburgers. I was thinking of making homemade macaroni and cheese and corn on the cob. My hubbie hates potato salad, cole slaw, and macaroni salad (basically anything cold & creamy). WHAT ELSE CAN I SERVE?? Any good easy recipes or ideas??

Answers:
A three bean salad is a good and healthy alternative to the creamy salads, and you can make it with a homemade mustard and vinegar dressing. A good hot alternative is baked beans. Instead of potato salad, you could grill up some potato wedges with seasoning.

BAKED BEANS, preferrably Bush's.

Try doing some kalamari, can go down a treat at a BBQ, so long as everyone likes it.
Some BBQd tiger prawns served with some mild chilli sauce is nice also.
Corn on the cob is a good bet, go for that one for sure as well.

wuts ur hubbie

yeah, french fries and some cold vegetable salad made up lettuce, tomato, green pepper, little bit of onnion, cabbage, bits and someothers you might like, add cooking oil, vinager salt and.....hmmmm, so tasty...

homemade mac and cheese is a good idea as is corn on the cob. I would also recommend regular potatoes. Maybe a jello salad? Or frog eye salad. And if anyone else is gonna be at this BBQ, then you have to have potato salad, cole slaw and all that stuff. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to eat it. But those are, like, requirments at a BBQ. Good Luck! And have fun!

I'd make a small creamy sald for your guests and then get creative...have cheese and cracker... get a hoagie and cut into small slices, do a vinegar cole slaw ( in Pittsburgh we out this on the burger with fries...mmm) You can fry some cabbage and noodles too ( called haluski) Chips and dips are always good too...do some chips and salsa then maybe a spinache dipp....Mix it up a bunch of little that way everyone likes something...

really good baked beans. there are plenty of good recipes on the net. and a relish tray with lots of choices. deviled eggs are always a big hit!

Grill some potatoes with a little oil, garlic salt and oregano.

Corn is good.

Fruit. Make a fruit tray with watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes....

I always do a potato bake - layer very thinly sliced potatoes with chopped spring onions in a greased baking dish, pour in single cream to just cover the potatoes and top with a generous amount of grated cheese. Bake in the oven for an hour covered with foil, then take off the foil for 30 minutes to let it brown. You could parboil the spuds first to cut down cooking time. Delicious with any grilled meat.

I think the baked beans and corn on the cob will be great. Use the Bush's suggested by someone else but dress them up. Take sliced bacon and snip into half inch pieces and scramble in a frying pan.. remove when almost done .. brown half a diced onion in the drippings .. add the bacon and onion to the beans with a little more brown sugar. Microwave 3-4 pieces of bacon until half done. Stir the beans, bacon bits, onion and sugar in a casserole dish and lay the bacon strips on top. Bake until the bacon cooks and the beans are heated. I fix this for my family at every cookout. Have a great BBQ!!! *SMILE*

Steamed green beans? Warm German potato salad? Meat and cheese trays? Bread bowl dips? French bread with olive oil dippers? Baked beans with hamburger and mustard? Tortilla roll-ups? Grilled garlic bread?

Great big Platters of nachos with cheese, tomato, onion, olive, jalapenos salsa and sour cream.

Corn on the cob, grilled in the husk
Pull the husk back remove silk and add salt and pepper and butter pull husk back over and tie with cotton cord
place directly on grill turning frequently
spray a couple of times with water
cook 15 minutes.

Veggie platter and a large salad

you can make a cold salad using macaroni's....boil the mac like if you were doing any other pasta...when it's done pour the water from it and mix it with green salad.
For dressing you can leave at the table (so people can use the one they like the most) some Honey mustard, vinaigrette, ranch...any dressing goes well with this kind of salad!

Grilled fruit kabobs. Skewer chunks of pineapple, mango, papaya, etc and stick them on the grill for just a few minutes.

Make baked beans with Bacon, maple syrup, mustard, chopped onions and green peppers and a little bit of BBQ sauce added to the canned baked beans.

Steak fries are always good.

Make grilled corn on the cob -delicious.

Fried, shoestring sweet potatoes.
Baked potatoe skins with cheese and bacon bits.
Steamed brocoli drizzled in butter sauce (to go with the corn on the cob)

Grilled veggies are great. (like onions, asparagus, tomatoes, bell peppers, maybe some squash) Toss them in olive oil with salt and pepper and then put them together in a bowl for a colorful side dish.

Some fruit is great too. Grilled pineapple is delicious when the sugars carmelize.

Maybe try a good brocolli salad? (its very flavorful and has lots of great textures.)

Boil some bowtie macaroni when done, mix cooked spinach or the vegetable of your choice, mix italian salad dressing, or ranch dressing and serve.
or make stringbean cassarole.

How many other people are there? Just because he hates it does not mean others hate it. Serve those salads and also make a green salad.

Cheese dip with crackers or chips, fruit tray, baked beans, rice pilaf

try grilled baked potatoes that you smother in butter and salt and pepper and wrap in tin-foil. Maybe corn on the cob grilled the same way as the potatoes i mentioned. you could also serve some fruit kabobs....mmmm. fresh fruit (cut up if big) on a stick is a good way to end a meal.

No harm in making the salads you mentioned if you know that others will eat them.
Do you like them? Make them too!
As for what else you can serve?
An EASY hot potato dish that we like is this:

Vincent Potatoes
(named for the family friend who first made them for us)

Boil cut up red potatoes, in their jackets (fork tender- not soft)
Drain
Saute w/ olive oil, fresh parsley, & fresh grated Locatelli cheese
salt and pepper to taste

buy those little cocktail weiners and mix them in a crock pot with a jar of grape jelly and a bottle of bab-b-que sauce. Heat and serve.

Mac and Cheese, corn on the cob sounds perfect. Baked beans sounds fine, too. I would stick to those.
